And the four and twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell upon their faces, and worshipped God, ¹⁷Saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned.

The Ultimate Shift: When God Takes His Great Power and Reigns

Have you ever looked at the world and felt a deep, unsettling ache? We watch the news and see nations enraged, systemic injustice, and human corruption actively breaking down the beauty of creation. It is easy to feel like evil is winning, or at the very least, that the chaos is spinning out of human control.

But the Book of Revelation pulls back the curtain of heaven to show us a different reality. In Revelation 11:16-17, we witness a spectacular cosmic shift that changes absolutely everything:

“And the twenty-four elders who sat before God on their thrones fell on their faces and worshiped God, saying: ‘We give You thanks, O Lord God Almighty, The One who is and who was and who is to come, Because You have taken Your great power and reigned.’”

The Posture of the Twenty-Four Elders

The twenty-four elders represent the totality of God’s people—the old and new covenants united in glory. Notice their immediate reaction when the seventh trumpet sounds. They don’t just casually bow; they fall on their faces.

Even though they have been given their own thrones and crowns, they completely abandon their positions of authority the moment the sovereignty of God is fully manifested. Their posture reminds us that in the presence of true holiness and ultimate power, the only natural response is total, unreserved surrender.

Why Are They Thanking God?

The elders offer a prayer of profound thanksgiving, but not for a future rescue mission. They praise God because He has taken His great power and begun to reign.

For centuries, God has allowed human history to play out. He has been patient, giving space for repentance, even while human rulers line up in rebellion against Him. But this passage marks the turning point where God says, “No more.” He steps in, reclaims His creation, and establishes His visible, unshakeable kingdom.

While the immediate aftermath of this shift brings heavy realities—the nations raging, the arrival of divine justice, and the destruction of those who corrupt the earth (Revelation 11:18)—it also brings the ultimate comfort for believers. The chaotic, broken status quo of this world is temporary. God’s righteous rule is permanent.

Living in Light of the Coming Kingdom

Knowing how the story ends should change how we live today. When the world feels turbulent, we don’t have to spiral into despair or match the anger of the culture. We can live with the quiet confidence of the twenty-four elders.

We serve the Lord God Almighty, the One who is, who was, and who is to come. Power doesn’t belong to the loudest political voices, the strongest military forces, or the corrupt structures of our day. Ultimate authority belongs to the King of Kings, and He is already on His way to fix what is broken.

A Closing Prayer

Lord God Almighty, the One who is and who was, we bow our hearts before You today in awe of Your absolute sovereignty. When we look at the chaos of the world around us, remind our souls that You hold history in Your hands. Forgive us for the times we let fear grab hold of us, forgetting that You are the ultimate Judge and King.

We thank You that Your kingdom is coming and that evil will not have the final word. Give us the courage to live as faithful witnesses of Your grace today. May our lives reflect the worship, surrender, and humility of heaven. We look forward with joy to the day when You take Your great power and reign completely. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
