YOU TOLERATE THAT WOMAN JEZEBEL, WHO CALLS HERSELF A PROPHETESS / REVELATION 2:20

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Revelation 2:20

Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.

Standing Against Compromise: A Reflection on Revelation 2:20

It is entirely possible to grow in ministry, remain active in service, and still harbor dangerous spiritual blind spots. This is the exact paradox we find in the ancient church of Thyatira. In Revelation 2:19, the Lord praises them for their spiritual maturity, noting that their “latter works exceed the first.” They were active, loving, faithful, and patient. Yet, right alongside this commendation came a sharp, sobering rebuke: “Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess” (Revelation 2:20).

Like the church at Pergamum before them, the believers at Thyatira fell into the trap of compromise. They allowed unbiblical teaching and immoral lifestyles to take root in their leadership, choosing comfort and tolerance over truth.

The Identity and Danger of “Jezebel”

John uses the name “Jezebel” symbolically, pointing back to the infamous Old Testament queen who led Israel into state-sponsored idolatry, sensuality, and manipulative control (1 Kings 16:31; 19:1-3). In Thyatira, this referred to a prominent influencer or leader who claimed to speak for God but was actually seducing sincere believers into spiritual and physical compromise.

This modern-day Jezebel spirit represents the dangerous idea that God’s grace offers a license to sin. She represents the subtle voice telling Christians they can have one foot in the kingdom and one foot in the world’s evil pleasures. Christ’s response to this is immediate and severe: He condemns the false teaching, exposes the harm it brings to His people, and calls both the deceivers and those who tolerate them to radical repentance.

Why We Tolerate the Untolerable

Why do faithful churches and believers fall into this trap? Why do we look the other way when God’s standards are compromised? The reasons vary, but they usually stem from a few specific heart issues:

  • Excusing Personal Behavior: Sometimes, we tolerate low standards in others because it makes us feel better about our own questionable compromises.
  • Apathy and Fear: It is often easier to stay silent out of spiritual laziness, a desire to protect personal friendships, or a deep fear of confrontation.
  • Selfish Gain: Tragically, some overlook sin in leadership for the sake of self-promotion, power, or material advantages.

God takes it deeply seriously when anyone—especially a professing believer—influences others to violate their conscience or engage in ungodly practices. Jesus warned that it would be better to have a millstone hung around one’s neck than to cause a little one to stumble (Matthew 18:6). God will judge false leaders, and He will discipline those who follow them if they refuse to repent (Revelation 2:20-23).

Guarding Our Hearts

Past success is no guarantee of future safety. To guard our lives and our churches against these destructive, subtle influences, we must consistently examine ourselves.

We must ask: Has our ministry fruitfulness, personal success, or spiritual growth caused us to rationalize questionable behavior? Are we overlooking personal or church-wide sin just to keep the peace?

We must reject any voice that elevates human opinion above the final authority of Biblical revelation. True love does not tolerate sin; it speaks the truth in love to bring about healing, repentance, and lasting transformation.

A Closing Prayer for Spiritual Discernment

Heavenly Father,

We come before You recognizing that You search our minds and test our hearts. We thank You for the areas where we have grown in faith, love, and service, but we ask that You keep us from becoming blind to our own compromises. Grant us the spiritual discernment to recognize false teachings and the subtle deceptions that try to creep into our lives and our churches.

Forgive us for the times we have chosen comfort over truth, or stayed silent out of fear and apathy. Give us the courage to stand firmly on Your Word, refusing to tolerate anything that grieves Your Holy Spirit. Guard our hearts against rationalizing sin, and let our lives be marked by true holiness and uncompromised devotion to You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
