START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) Leviticus 24:2
Command the children of Israel, that they bring unto thee pure oil olive beaten for the light, to cause the lamps to burn continually.
Keeping the Flame Alive: Fueling the Light of God’s Presence
When reading through the Old Testament, it is easy to get lost in the intricate instructions of the Tabernacle. Yet, hidden within these ancient laws are profound spiritual truths meant for us today. In Leviticus 24:2, God gives a specific command to Moses:
“Command the Israelites to bring you clear oil of pressed olives for the light so that the lamps may be kept burning continually.”
This single verse captures a beautiful, eternal blueprint for our walk with God. The lampstand inside the holy place wasn’t just a practical tool to help the priests see; it was a physical representation of The Light—the perpetual, unwavering presence of God among His people.
But notice a key detail: the light required fuel, and that fuel required the participation of the community.
The Cost of the Purest Oil
The scripture specifies that the oil must be “pure oil of pressed olives”. In ancient times, the finest oil wasn’t extracted by heavy machinery or chemical processes; it was produced by gently beating or pressing the olives. This process yielded a clear, clean-burning oil that wouldn’t produce heavy smoke or foul odors inside the sacred space.
For us, this pure oil symbolizes the premium we place on our relationship with God. It speaks of a devotion that costs us something. Keeping our spiritual lamps burning requires our best—our intentional time, our focused attention, and a heart completely surrendered to Him. Sometimes, the “pressing” seasons of our lives—our trials, struggles, and moments of testing—are exactly what produce the purest oil of faith and reliance on the Holy Spirit.
A Continual Burn
The text also emphasizes that the lamps were to be kept burning continually. The priests had a daily responsibility to trim the wicks, clear out the soot, and replenish the oil supply.
Our spiritual life operates on the exact same principle. We cannot survive on yesterday’s oil. A powerful church service, a weekend retreat, or a deep prayer time from last month cannot sustain the daily demands of today. We are called to live a lifestyle of constant spiritual vigilance, continually returning to the source to replenish our reserves.
Jesus echoed this reality in the New Testament when He declared, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). Later, He warned His followers to keep their lamps trimmed and full of oil while waiting for His return (Matthew 25:1-13).
Fueling Your Lamp Today
How do we practically bring the “oil” to fuel our relationship with God today?
- The Oil of Prayer: Consistent communication keeps our hearts aligned with His voice.
- The Oil of the Word: Diving into Scripture illuminates our path and pushes back the darkness of the world.
- The Oil of Obedience: Simply doing what God asks of us, even when it requires sacrifice or surrender.
Don’t let your fire grow dim. Bring your pure oil today, let the Holy Spirit tend to your heart, and allow His light to shine through you to a world that desperately needs it.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being the source of true, unquenchable light in our lives. We praise You because Your presence is always with us, guiding our steps and comforting our souls even in the darkest seasons.
Lord, we come before You today and lay down our worries, our need for control, and our self-reliance. Forgive us for the times we have allowed the distractions of this world to steal our attention, causing our spiritual fire to flicker or grow cold.
Today, we bring the pure oil of our worship, our obedience, and our surrender. We ask that You pour out the fresh oil of Your Holy Spirit upon us. Fill our reserves. Teach us how to cultivate a daily, intentional relationship with You so that our lamps may burn continually without going out.
Let Your Light shine brightly through our words, our actions, and our character. May our lives be a testament to Your goodness, drawing others out of darkness and into Your marvelous grace.
In Jesus’ mighty name we pray, Amen.
