START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) Leviticus 23:5
In the fourteenth day of the first month at even is the Lord’s passover.
Covered by the Blood: Reflecting on the Lord’s Passover
“In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at twilight, is the Lord’s Passover.” — Leviticus 23:5
When we open the book of Leviticus, we often expect complex laws and detailed rituals. Yet, tucked inside Leviticus 23 is a beautiful blueprint of God’s heart. Here, God outlines His appointed feasts—not merely as historical commemorations for Israel, but as deep, prophetic markers that point straight to redemption. At the very head of these spring feasts stands The Lord’s Passover.
Understanding the Context: A Night of Rescue
The roots of Leviticus 23:5 trace back to the intense, dramatic night in Egypt recorded in the Book of Exodus. After generations of slavery, God was executing His final judgment against Pharaoh to set His people free. The instruction was precise: each family was to select a flawless lamb, slay it at twilight, and strike its blood on the doorposts of their homes.
When the destroyer passed through Egypt, any home marked by the blood of the lamb was spared. It wasn’t the merit, status, or goodness of the people inside that saved them; it was purely the presence of the blood.
Why It Matters Today: The Ultimate Lamb
As centuries passed, Israel observed this feast year after year as a perpetual ordinance. But it was always a shadow pointing to a greater substance.
In the New Testament, when John the Baptist saw Jesus approaching, he didn’t call Him a great teacher or a revolutionary leader. Instead, he cried out: “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29).
Just as the original Passover lamb was slain at twilight on the fourteenth day, Jesus hung on the cross at that very same season, pouring out His life to deliver us from a slavery much worse than Egypt’s—the bondage of sin and eternal death.
The Takeaway for Our Hearts
The Lord’s Passover reminds us that our rescue belongs entirely to God’s sovereign mercy. We cannot earn our safety, nor can we work our way out of our brokenness. When we anchor our faith in Jesus Christ, His blood shields us, redeems us, and calls us forward into true spiritual freedom.
Let us pause today to remember the costly sacrifice that bought our peace and live with hearts full of gratitude.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
We bow before You today with hearts full of awe as we reflect on the depth of Your love. Thank You for the profound truth hidden within Your Word in Leviticus 23:5. Long before we ever cried out for a Savior, You had already designed a perfect plan for our rescue.
Thank You, Lord Jesus, for being our true Passover Lamb. Thank You for your ultimate sacrifice on the cross, shedding Your precious, unblemished blood so that we could be spared from judgment and brought out of darkness. We acknowledge that our freedom is a gift of Your sovereign grace, not our own doing.
Help us to live every day in the light of that freedom. Search our hearts, clean away any old leaven of bitterness or pride, and let our lives reflect the joy of the redeemed. We pray also for the peace of Jerusalem and for Your ongoing protection and grace over Your people across the world.
In the mighty and holy name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Redeemer, we pray. Amen.
