FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT / LUKE 1:67

(KJV) Luke 1:67

And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,

Filled with the Holy Spirit: Lessons from Luke 1:67

The Christmas story is full of extraordinary moments, but one of the most powerful threads running through it is the presence of the Holy Spirit. Long before the day of Pentecost in the book of Acts, God was already using His Spirit to empower godly men and women surrounding the birth of Jesus Christ.

In Luke 1:67, we witness one of these profound moments:

“His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied…”

The Power of the Spirit in the Christmas Narrative

Zechariah had spent months in absolute silence after doubting the angel’s promise of a son. Yet, the moment his mouth was opened and his faith was restored, he didn’t just speak—he prophesied. This wasn’t of his own human wisdom. He was entirely under the influence and guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Luke’s gospel carefully highlights that this empowerment was a frequent mark of God’s work during this era:

  • John the Baptist was filled with the Spirit from his mother’s womb (Luke 1:15).
  • Mary conceived the Savior through the power of the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:34-35).
  • Elizabeth was filled with the Spirit when Mary greeted her (Luke 1:41).
  • Simeon moved under the guidance of the Holy Spirit in the temple (Luke 2:25).

For Zechariah, being filled with the Spirit resulted in a song of praise (often called the Benedictus). His prophecy looked beyond his newborn son, John, and focused squarely on the arriving Messiah who would bring redemption, salvation, and light to those sitting in darkness.

A Promise for Us Today

The beautiful truth for modern believers is that this empowerment is no longer reserved for specific individuals at specific moments in history. After Jesus accomplished His mission on earth and ascended back to heaven, the way was opened for all believers to experience this reality.

As recorded in Acts 1 – 2, the Holy Spirit was poured out on the entire church. Today, when you place your faith in Christ, the same Holy Spirit that empowered Zechariah, Elizabeth, and Simeon comes to dwell within you. You have access to that same divine strength, comfort, and guidance every single day.

When we yield our lives to the Holy Spirit, our response mimics Zechariah’s: our mouths are opened to praise God, our lives testify to His goodness, and we are empowered to serve His kingdom.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the beautiful reminder in Your Word of how Your Holy Spirit works in the lives of those who seek You. Just as You filled Zechariah and gave him the words to declare Your truth, we ask that You fill us afresh today.

Forgive us for the times we rely on our own strength instead of leaning on Your divine power. Let Your Holy Spirit guide our thoughts, direct our steps, and give us the courage to speak of Your salvation. May our lives be a continuous song of praise that points others to Jesus Christ.

In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.
