And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments.

True and Just Are Your Judgments: Understanding the Holiness of God

When we read through the Book of Revelation, the imagery can feel overwhelming. Plagues are unleashed, bowls of wrath are poured out, and the earth experiences the terrifying weight of divine justice. In the middle of this intense narrative, a profound declaration cuts through the chaos:

“Yes, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are your judgments.” — Revelation 16:7

For many modern readers, this causes a moment of hesitation. How do we reconcile a God of infinite love with a God who executes such severe judgments? To truly understand this passage, we have to look deeper into the perfect character of God, the reality of sin, and the intersection of His justice and mercy.

The Reality of God’s Perfect Character

Those who question God’s love and righteousness in light of His judgments often misunderstand His perfect character. God is not acting out of arbitrary anger or malice. He is completely holy—perfectly pure and entirely separated from all evil.

Because He is holy, He cannot remain neutral toward things that destroy, corrupt, and harm. God must oppose and punish evil (John 3:19; Hebrews 1:9; Psalms 119:137). His perfect justice means He cannot simply overlook or excuse sin (Romans 6:2). Sin is so fundamentally opposed to His perfect nature that it carries the most extreme penalty: death (Romans 6:23). This is a consequence humanity has earned through defiance against a good Creator.

Where Justice and Mercy Meet

If the story ended there, it would be a tragedy of cosmic proportions. But God’s justice does not contradict His mercy and love. Instead, they meet perfectly at the cross.

To satisfy His own perfect justice, God chose to pay the ultimate price Himself. Out of immense love, He sent His Son, Jesus, into the world as a perfect gift (John 3:16; 1 John 4:9-10). Jesus took our place, absorbing the punishment and wrath that we deserved (Isaiah 53:5-6; Romans 4:25; 1 Peter 3:18).

The Cross Demanded Justice: Sin could not be ignored; the price had to be paid.
The Cross Displayed Mercy: God paid the debt so that we wouldn’t have to.

Through Christ, God now provides total forgiveness and spiritual freedom for anyone who entrusts their life to Him (Romans 6:23).

The Cry of the Altar

In Revelation 16:7, the voice affirming God’s justice comes directly from the altar. This is deeply symbolic. The altar is the place of sacrifice and the place where the prayers of the suffering saints are remembered.

Heaven does not look at the final judgment of evil as unprompted cruelty. Instead, it is seen as the right, true, and long-awaited setting right of all things. Those who reject Christ’s sacrifice ultimately choose to bear the consequences of their own rebellion. But for those who have placed their faith in Jesus, the final judgment is a reminder that evil will not have the last word, and that God’s character is entirely trustworthy.

When everything is laid bare, every voice in heaven and earth will look at how history unfolds and echo that same declaration: True and just are Your ways.

A Closing Prayer

Lord God Almighty, Your ways are higher than our ways, and Your thoughts are deeper than our thoughts. We confess that sometimes Your judgments terrify us, and we struggle to comprehend the magnitude of Your holiness. Yet, we praise You because You are completely good, entirely pure, and perfectly just.

Thank You for not leaving us to bear the weight of our own sin. Thank You for sending Jesus to satisfy justice and pour out limitless mercy on our behalf. Help us to hold fast to faith in a broken world, to live lives that honor Your holiness, and to confidently share Your love with others. We trust Your character and Your timing. True and righteous are Your judgments, now and forevermore.
