FEAST OF UNLEAVENED BREAD / Leviticus 23:6

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Leviticus 23:6

And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread unto the Lord: seven days ye must eat unleavened bread.

Purging the Old, Embracing the True: The Feast of Unleavened Bread

Leviticus 23:6 states: “And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the Feast of Unleavened Bread to the Lord; for seven days you shall eat unleavened bread.” This text introduces an essential spiritual rhythm established right after the Passover. While the Passover celebrates our initial rescue from bondage, the Feast of Unleavened Bread teaches us how to walk forward in that new freedom.

Historically, when Israel left Egypt, they departed in such extreme haste that they didn’t have time to let their dough rise. They packed their kneading troughs wrapped in clothes and baked flat, yeastless cakes in the desert. God transformed that historical urgency into a permanent annual reminder for His people.

The Spiritual Significance of Leaven

In Scripture, leaven (yeast) is frequently used as a metaphor for sin, malice, and hypocrisy. A small piece of fermented dough hidden in a batch of fresh flour will quietly and steadily spread, inflating the entire loaf.

Sin operates in exactly the same way:

  • It starts small: A minor compromise or tiny grievance seems harmless at first.
  • It grows quietly: It spreads undetected beneath the surface of our hearts.
  • It alters the entire structure: Left unchecked, it eventually corrupts our thoughts, words, and actions.

By commanding His people to clear out every trace of leaven from their homes for seven full days, God wasn’t just managing their diet; He was addressing their spiritual posture. He wanted to draw them into an intentional period of deep reflection, self-examination, and cleansing.

Walking Out Your Deliverance

It is easy to celebrate the initial moment of salvation—our personal “Passover.” But the Feast of Unleavened Bread reminds us that God didn’t just take us out of the world; He wants to take the world out of us.

Paul echoes this reality in the New Testament, writing in 1 Corinthians 5:7-8: “Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. Let us therefore celebrate the festival, not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.”

Living “unleavened” means intentionally choosing honesty over hypocrisy, purity over corruption, and the simple truth of God’s Word over the inflated pride of the culture. It is a daily, deliberate step to align our current actions with our redeemed identity.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We thank You for being the Great Deliverer who rescues us from the bondage of sin and darkness. Lord, as we reflect on Your command in Leviticus 23:6, we ask that You would shine the light of Your Holy Spirit into the deep corners of our hearts. Reveal any hidden leaven—any unresolved anger, pride, deceit, or compromise that has quietly crept into our lives.

Give us the courage to purge out the old habits and mentalities that belong to our past. We pray that You would fill us instead with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. Cleanse our motives, anchor our faith, and help us walk out the true freedom that Christ has bought for us. May our lives be a pure offering, holy and pleasing in Your sight.

In the holy name of Jesus we pray, Amen.
