KEEP THE UNITY / EPHESIANS 4:3

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Ephesians 4:3

Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Keeping the Unity You Didn’t Create

Have you ever tried to force a group of people to get along? Whether it’s a family reunion, a corporate team, or even a church committee, human engineering can only take us so far. We organize icebreakers, write mission statements, and establish rules of conduct. Yet, true, deep-seated unity remains frustratingly out of reach.

That is because structural uniformity is a human project, but spiritual unity is a divine reality.

In Ephesians 4:3, the Apostle Paul issues a powerful charge to the church: “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”

Notice the specific wording here. Paul does not command us to create unity. He commands us to keep it.

A Unity That Already Exists

As Paul spent the first three chapters of Ephesians explaining, the unity of the Spirit already exists for everyone who has accepted the truth and received Christ. It is a finished work. When Christ died on the cross, He broke down the walls of division. The moment you entered into fellowship with God, you were automatically knit into a single, global, spiritual family.

You don’t have to manufacture this bond. You cannot build it through human organizations, committees, or intellectual agreement on every minor theological issue. It is a unity born of love and purpose, anchored in the very life of God.

Our job isn’t to build the bridge; our job is to walk across it and protect it.

Guarding the Bond

How do we maintain something we didn’t create? Paul gives us the roadmap:

  • Live Worthily: We maintain unity by living “a life worthy of the calling [we] have received” (Ephesians 4:1). This means our daily conduct should reflect the high value of the gospel.
  • Stay Loyal to Truth: True unity never sacrifices truth for the sake of a false peace. We move in obedience to the leading of the Spirit and speak the truth in love.
  • Let Love Produce Good Works: While unity is an internal reality, it always expresses itself outwardly. A church operating in the unity of the Spirit will naturally overflow with good works, mutual care, and practical love for one another (1 John 3:17-18).

When we stop trying to manufacture unity by human effort (Galatians 3:3) and instead surrender to Christ’s love at work within us, something beautiful happens. The world looks at the church and sees the supernatural peace described in Psalms 133—a refreshing, life-giving harmony that can only be explained by the presence of God.

Let’s stop striving to build our own versions of community and start making every effort to guard the priceless unity the Spirit has already given us.

A Closing Prayer for Unity

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the beautiful reality of the Body of Christ. Thank You that through Your Son, You have already broken down the walls that divide us and have woven us together into one Spirit. We confess that too often we try to handle conflict and community in our own strength, relying on human effort rather than Your grace.

Holy Spirit, help us to maintain the unity You have already created. Grant us the humility, gentleness, and patience required to walk worthily of our calling. Guard our hearts against bitterness, pride, and division. May our love for one another be so vibrant and our purpose so clear that the world looks at us and sees the undeniable reality of Jesus Christ. Keep us bound together in Your perfect peace.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
