START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) John 12:23-24
And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified. 24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.
The Gravity of the Ground: Reimagining Our Seasons of Loss
We live in a culture obsessed with preservation. We buy creams to preserve our youth, build savings to preserve our security, and guard our comfort zones fiercely to preserve our peace. When suffering knocks on our door, or when we are asked to let go of something we love, our natural instinct is to treat it as a tragedy. We see it as a structural failure in our plan for a happy life.
But in the economy of God, the path to ultimate victory looks completely different.
In John 12:23-24, Jesus introduces a paradox that turns our human understanding of success completely upside down:
“And Jesus answered them, saying, ‘The hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.'”
Glory Cloaked in a Cross
When Jesus spoke these words, the shadow of the cross was actively looming over Him. To any logical outside observer, the upcoming crucifixion was a horrific defeat—a brutal, premature end to a revolutionary ministry. Yet, Jesus didn’t look at the cross and see a tragedy. He looked at it and saw His glorification.
Every miracle He performed, every sermon He preached, and every mile He walked had led directly to this exact hour. He was preparing to lay down His life to pay the ultimate price for human sin. But the story didn’t end in the tomb. Jesus knew that this painful death was the mandatory doorway to His resurrection and His eventual return to the place of highest honor alongside His Father in heaven. What the world saw as total destruction, God saw as the ultimate fulfillment of purpose.
The Anatomy of a Harvest
To make this heavy spiritual truth accessible to His disciples, Jesus pointed to the simple mechanics of agriculture: the law of the seed.
A single seed kept safe on a shelf is completely secure. It is protected from the elements, free from pain, and entirely comfortable. But as long as it stays there, it remains completely alone. It achieves absolutely nothing. It never multiplies, and it never fulfills its true destiny.
For that seed to ever matter, it must be dropped into the dark, cold dirt. It must experience pressure, moisture, and decay. Its outer shell must literally break apart and disintegrate. From the outside, it looks like a funeral. But on the inside, that precise point of “death” triggers a miraculous burst of new life. The seed breaks open to let a shoot push through the soil, eventually growing into a massive, life-giving harvest.
The Daily Choice to Die
Jesus didn’t share the law of the seed just to explain His own literal death; He shared it as a blueprint for our daily lives. He was telling His disciples—and us—that the only path to true spiritual fruitfulness and kingdom effectiveness is through suffering and a deliberate death to our carnal, fleshly nature.
Dying to self is not a poetic metaphor; it is a daily, often agonizing choice:
- It means choosing forgiveness when your flesh screams for retaliation.
- It means choosing humility and serving in secret when you desperately want recognition.
- It means choosing obedience to God’s word when your personal desires point in the exact opposite direction.
When we try to tightly preserve our own lives, shielding ourselves from sacrifice and discomfort, we end up exactly like the seed on the shelf—safe, but completely isolated and spiritually dry. But when we willingly surrender our rights, our pride, and our plans into the hands of God, we find that the dark places we fear are not burials at all. They are plantings.
If you are walking through a season of loss, pruning, or heavy breaking today, take heart. In the hands of the Savior, the ground is never the end of the story—it is the birthplace of your greatest harvest.
A Closing Prayer
Father in Heaven,
Thank You for the beautiful, costly example of Your Son, Jesus. Thank You that He did not run from the ground, but willingly became the grain of wheat that fell and died so that we could be brought into Your family. We praise You that His suffering was the direct path to His glory and our eternal freedom.
Lord, we confess that we hate the dark seasons. We find it incredibly hard to trust You when our plans fall apart, when our pride is broken, and when we are called to lay down things we hold dear. Our flesh fights against the dying process every single day.
Give us the supernatural grace and courage to surrender. Help us to stop fighting the ground and instead trust the hands of the Gardener. Break open our hearts, crucify our selfish desires, and let Your Holy Spirit produce a beautiful, lasting harvest of righteousness through our lives. In the mighty and glorious name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
