SHOUTING HOSANNA / JOHN 12:13

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) John 12:13

Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.

Shouting Hosanna: The Cry That Changes Everything

We often treat worship like a polite nod to God. We sit quietly in church pews, sing at a reasonable volume, and keep our faith tucked away where it won’t disrupt our daily routines. But on the very first Palm Sunday, worship was anything but quiet. It was a roar.

In John 12:13, we witness a scene of unbridled passion and desperate hope:

“They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, ‘Hosanna!’ ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’ ‘Blessed is the king of Israel!’”

The crowds didn’t just welcome Jesus; they publicly declared their allegiance to Him. They lined the streets, cut down palm branches—a traditional symbol of victory and national deliverance—and shattered the atmosphere with a single, urgent word: Hosanna!

But what does it truly mean to shout Hosanna, and how does that change the way we live our lives today?

The True Meaning of Hosanna

To modern ears, “Hosanna” sounds like a synonym for “Hallelujah” or “Praise God.” While it is used in celebration, its roots run much deeper.

Derived from the Hebrew phrase Hoshi’ah Na, found in Psalms 118:25, Hosanna literally translates to “Save us, we pray!” or “Save us now!”.

It wasn’t just a catchy chorus; it was a desperate plea for rescue. The Jewish people were suffering under heavy Roman oppression. They wanted a political conqueror, a military hero on a warhorse to overthrow their enemies. Instead, Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a humble donkey, fulfilling the prophecy of Zechariah as a King of peace.

They were crying out for political liberation, but Jesus was marching toward the cross to give them ultimate, eternal liberation from sin and death.

Bringing Our Shouts Into Everyday Life

The tragedy of the Palm Sunday crowd is how quickly their voices shifted. Just days after shouting “Hosanna!”, many in the same city would be swept up in the crowd crying “Crucify Him!”. It is easy to praise Jesus when things are going well, or when we are surrounded by a crowd of believers. The real challenge is maintaining that same devotion when the crowd walks away.

Applying John 12:13 to our modern faith means two things:

  1. Laying Down Our Palms: Just as the crowds laid down their branches and cloaks, we are called to lay down our pride, our personal agendas, and our worries at the feet of Jesus. We must acknowledge that He is the King of our lives, not just a casual acquaintance.
  2. Shouting in the Silence: It means openly honoring Jesus in everyday life—at your office, in your school, and inside your home. It means choosing not to hide your faith when it feels awkward, unpopular, or counter-cultural.

When we shout Hosanna today, we are offering up our praises while simultaneously handing over our problems. We are saying, “Lord, I praise You because You are holy, and I trust You to save me from the things I cannot fix myself.”

A Closing Prayer for the Week

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for sending Your Son to pave a way of freedom for us through the power of the cross and the victory of the Resurrection. We acknowledge Jesus today as our true King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

Forgive us for the times we have stayed silent when we should have been praising You. Give us the courage to shout ‘Hosanna’ in every situation, knowing that You are our ultimate rescuer. We lay down our worries, our fears, and our pride at Your feet today. Save us, change us, and empower us to live our faith boldly so that Your light shines through us into the world.

In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.
