And I went unto the angel, and said unto him, Give me the little book. And he said unto me, Take it, and eat it up; and it shall make thy belly bitter, but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey.

Take It and Eat It: Digitizing and Living out the Word of God

In Revelation 10:9, the Apostle John is given a striking and unusual command: “So I went to the angel and told him to give me the little scroll. And he said to me, ‘Take it and eat it; it will make your stomach bitter, but in your mouth it will be as sweet as honey.'”

This dramatic moment represents a profound spiritual truth that every believer must face. God’s Word is not meant to be merely read, casually skimmed, or treated as an academic exercise. We are called to spiritually digest it, making it an inseparable part of who we are before we can effectively live it out or share it with others.

The Pattern of the Prophets

John’s experience is not isolated. It mirrors the callings of ancient prophets who came before him:

Ezekiel was commanded to eat a scroll before speaking to the house of Israel (Ezekiel 2:8; 3:3). It tasted like honey, signifying that receiving God’s true word is a sweet privilege.
Jeremiah declared, “Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart” (Jeremiah 15:16).

For these servants, “eating” the book pictured a deep internalizing of divine truth. They had to own the message completely before they could proclaim it to a broken world.

The Bittersweet Reality of Truth

Why does the scroll taste sweet as honey in the mouth but turn sour in the stomach? It represents the mixture of blessing and curse, mercy and judgment inherent in God’s revelation.

God’s Word is not all sweetness; much of it is hard to take:

The Sweetness (The Mouth)	The Bitterness (The Stomach)
Speaks of overwhelming mercy, grace, and redemption.	Reveals the devastating reality of sin and impending judgment.
Delights the faithful who love to hear and obey (Psalms 19:9-10).	Pronounces a sobering sentence upon those who reject Christ.
Concludes with the ultimate, glorious hope of eternal reign (Revelation 22:5).	Brings deep sorrow over the destiny of an unrepentant world.

John, who wrote so beautifully about love in his Gospel and letters, had to stomach the heavy truth that the final message he was called to deliver contained immense bitterness and sorrow for the world.

Making It Personal

We cannot cherry-pick the scriptures that comfort us while ignoring the ones that convict us. To truly “eat the scroll” means accepting the fullness of God’s truth—both the sweet promises of heaven and the bitter realities of our own need for repentance. Only when we fully digest His Word can we walk in true obedience and share His truth with authentic love and urgency.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, Your Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. We thank You for the sweetness of Your grace, Your mercy, and the eternal hope we have in Jesus Christ. Give us the courage to not just read Your Word, but to truly take it and eat it. Help us to spiritually digest Your truth, even when it challenges, convicts, or breaks our hearts for a fallen world. May Your message become a part of our very being, so that we may live faithfully and proclaim Your love and truth with boldness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
