(KJV) Exodus 17:11
And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.
Moses Held Up His Hands: The Power of Dependence and Prayer
In Exodus 17:11, we witness a striking battlefield reality: “As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning.”
This wasn’t a magic trick. By holding his hands up to the Lord, Moses was demonstrating a profound, absolute dependence on God.
Israel’s strength and victory never belonged to their military strategy or physical might; it depended entirely on their faith in God, actively expressed through prayer and obedience. The moment Moses stopped praying, the flow of God’s supernatural power stopped.
The Principle Under the New Covenant
This spiritual reality did not fade away with history. It applies directly to us today under the New Covenant—God’s ultimate plan of spiritual salvation and renewed relationship through the life and sacrifice of His Son, Jesus.
The equation remains the same:
- When we rely on ourselves: We cut off our supply of spiritual strength. If we fail to pray and depend on God, we will eventually lose His protection, blessing, and favor.
- When we rely on God: We access an undefeated source of strength. Our only true hope of victory over the battles in our lives comes from active, relentless reliance on Him.
Because of Jesus, we don’t have to face our battles from a distance. We are commanded to embrace the incredible privilege we have to “approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy.” In that holy place, we will always “find grace to help us in our time of need.”
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Like Moses on the hill, we lift our hands and our hearts to You today. Forgive us for the times we have tried to fight our battles in our own strength, forgetting that our victory belongs to You alone. We acknowledge our absolute dependence on Your power, Your mercy, and Your grace.
When our arms grow heavy and our spirits grow weary, give us the strength to keep praying and trusting. We thank You for the privilege of the New Covenant, allowing us to approach Your throne of grace with bold confidence. Flood our lives with Your protection, blessing, and favor as we surrender our battles into Your capable hands.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
