(KJV) Genesis 18:22

And the men turned their faces from thence, and went toward Sodom: but Abraham stood yet before the Lord.

Standing in the Gap: The Power of Intercessory Prayer

Have you ever looked at the world around you and felt a deep, heavy burden for the people in it? In a world that often feels like it is drifting further away from peace and righteousness, it is easy to feel helpless. But Scripture gives us a powerful blueprint for what to do when we see judgment on the horizon.

In Genesis 18:22, we find a profound, quiet moment that holds a massive truth for our lives today: “The men turned away and went toward Sodom, but Abraham remained standing before the Lord.”

Remaining Standing Before the Lord

The background of this passage is urgent. God had just revealed His plan to assess the heavy sin of Sodom and Gomorrah. Knowing that his nephew, Lot, and his family lived in that wicked city, Abraham’s heart was filled with concern. Instead of walking away or throwing his hands up in despair, Abraham chose to stand his ground in the presence of the Almighty.

This posture of “standing before the Lord” is the very definition of intercessory prayer. Intercession means stepping into the gap between God’s righteous judgment and a broken world, pleading for grace and mercy on behalf of others.

Abraham didn’t just pray a quick, casual prayer. In the verses that followed, he engaged in a bold yet deeply humble conversation with God. He appealed directly to God’s character, asking, “Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?” Step by step, Abraham pleaded for the city—asking God to spare it if fifty righteous people were found, then forty-five, forty, thirty, twenty, and finally, ten.

An Answer We Didn’t Expect

God answered Abraham’s prayer, but He did not answer it in the way Abraham expected.

As we read later in the text, ten righteous people could not be found in Sodom, and the cities were ultimately destroyed for their severe wickedness. However, God did not ignore Abraham’s heart. He remembered Abraham’s plea and sent His angels to physically rescue Lot and his daughters out of the destruction. God saved the few who were righteous, even while executing justice on the ungodly.

This tells us something vital about our prayer lives: God always hears our intercession, but His rescue operations don’t always look like our blueprints. He is completely faithful to preserve His people through the storm, even when the storm itself cannot be averted.

The Final Judgment and Our Present Calling

This ancient account serves as a shadow of a future reality. The New Testament warns us that God will one day carry out His final, greatest judgment on a world that has rejected Him (1 Thessalonians 5:2; 2 Thessalonians 2:2).

Yet, just as He did for Lot, God has made a glorious promise to rescue those who share a right relationship with Him through Jesus Christ (Luke 21:36; Revelation 3:10). Jesus Himself stands as our ultimate Intercessor—the One who perfectly stood in the gap for us so that we could be saved from the ultimate destruction of sin.

Until that final day comes, our calling is clear. Like Abraham, we cannot simply watch the culture collapse around us and do nothing. We are called to stand before the Lord. We are called to pray boldly for our families, our cities, and our nation—pleading for God’s mercy and sharing the good news of His salvation before the window of grace closes.

Who has God placed on your heart today? Don’t walk away. Remain standing before the Lord for them.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, Judge of all the earth, we praise You because You are both perfectly just and beautifully merciful. Thank You for the privilege of prayer and for inviting us to stand in Your presence to intercede for others.

Lord, we lift up our loved ones, our neighbors, and our broken world to You today. We ask that You would pour out Your Holy Spirit and draw hearts to repentance. Give us the shepherd’s heart of Abraham to pray with boldness and humility. Where there is impending brokenness or judgment, we ask for Your mercy. Thank You for being our ultimate rescue and our secure anchor. Protect those who love You, and use our lives to point a dying world toward Your saving grace. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
