START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) Luke 10:2
Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.
The Harvest is Plentiful: Answering the Call to the Fields
We live in a world that often feels deeply fractured, searching, and exhausted. Turn on the news or scroll through your feed, and it is easy to become overwhelmed by the sheer volume of brokenness. But where human eyes see exhaustion, Jesus sees an opportunity.
In Luke 10:2, Jesus turns to His disciples and drops a radical truth bomb that shifts our entire perspective on the world around us:
โThe harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore, pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvestโ.
If youโve been feeling like the work of sharing love, faith, and hope is too big for you, this verse is exactly what you need to hear. Letโs break down what it means for our daily lives.
1. Shift Your Eyes to the Harvest
It is easy to develop “spiritual tunnel vision” where we only notice the hostility or indifference in our culture. But Jesus says the harvest is already plentiful.
People all around usโin our neighborhoods, our workplaces, and our grocery storesโare quietly hurting and looking for real truth. The problem isnโt a lack of open hearts; the grain is ripe and ready. The real question is: are we willing to look past the surface noise and see the spiritual hunger in people’s lives?
2. The Power of Outward Prayer
Notice Jesusโ primary strategy for changing the world. He doesnโt launch a massive marketing campaign or demand a complex political strategy. He commands us to pray.
Too often, our prayers are completely inward-focusedโasking God to fix our personal problems and comfort our own lives. While God cares about those things, Luke 10:2 calls us to a risky, exhilarating kind of missional prayer. We are called to pray explicitly for God to raise up workers with the passion and skills to reach the broken.
3. Becoming the Answer to Your Own Prayer
Here is the holy irony of Luke 10:2: right after Jesus tells the disciples to pray for workers, He looks at them in Luke 10:3 and says, “Go your way; behold, I am sending you out”.
When we pray earnestly for God to change people’s lives, He usually starts by changing ours. You donโt need a seminary degree or a plane ticket to a foreign country to be a laborer. Your harvest field is exactly where your feet are planted todayโyour family, your friendships, and your daily community.
A Closing Prayer for the Harvest
Heavenly Father,
You are the Lord of the Harvest, and everything belongs to You. Forgive us for the times we look at our world with fear or cynicism instead of seeing it through Your eyes of compassion. Open our eyes today to see the fields that are white and ready for harvest right around us.
We pray earnestly today according to Your Word: please send out more laborers into Your harvest field. Raise up men, women, and young people with a fierce passion to make Your good news known with boldness.
And Lord, give us the courage to be an answer to that prayer. When You whisper, “Go,” grant us the grace to step out in faith, trusting that You are our provider and that we never walk alone. Use our words, our kindness, and our lives to bring lost souls safely into Your kingdom.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
