START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) 1 Thessalonians 4:6
That no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter: because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified.
Moving Beyond the Boundaries: Understanding the True Cost of Sexual Sin
When we think about purity, we often frame it purely as a private matter—a personal rule between an individual and God. However, in 1 Thessalonians 4:6, the Apostle Paul introduces a sobering reality that completely shifts our perspective: sexual immorality is never a victimless crime.
The scripture warns that no one should “wrong his brother or take advantage of him in this matter.”
When we explore the original Greek context, the word used for “wrong” or “take advantage” is pleonokteo. It literally means to overreach, to go beyond what is right, or to greedily claim more than what belongs to you.
Stealing What Cannot Be Replaced
God established the boundary of marriage not to restrict our joy, but to protect our souls and our relationships. When we step outside of those protective boundaries, we aren’t just breaking a rule; we are actively taking advantage of another human being.
All sexual activity outside of marriage—whether it is premarital sex, adultery, or any level of sexual involvement outside the covenant of marriage—is an act of deep injustice. In a very real sense, it steals treasures from another person that can never be fully returned or replaced:
- Purity and innocence
- Physical and emotional wholeness
- A clear and good conscience before God
In adultery, the rights and trust of a spouse are directly violated. In premarital relationships, it robs a future spouse of the exclusive gift of purity that God intended to be shared uniquely within marriage.
A Call to Honor, Not to Devour
Our culture often views sex as a consumer commodity—something to be taken, experienced, and discarded based on personal desire. But as believers, we are called to a completely different standard. We are called to love, and love does not take advantage. Love respects boundaries. Love protects the holiness of our brothers and sisters in Christ.
True freedom isn’t found in stepping over God’s boundaries; it is found in trusting that His design is good, whole, and deeply protective of our hearts and the hearts of those we care about.
A Closing Prayer for Purity and Justice
Heavenly Father,
We come before You acknowledging that Your ways are perfect and Your boundaries are set in love. Forgive us for the times we have viewed purity through a selfish lens, forgetting how our choices impact the people around us. Give us the grace and the strength to guard our hearts, our eyes, and our actions.
Help us to honor our brothers and sisters in Christ, refusing to overreach or take advantage of anyone in thought, word, or deed. Deliver us from the deceptive lies of a world that treats people as objects. Instead, fill us with a deep respect for the physical, emotional, and spiritual wholeness of others. May our relationships reflect Your holiness, Your justice, and Your protective love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
