Called to Purity: Living Out 1 Thessalonians 4:3-7
In a world where cultural standards are constantly shifting, finding a firm anchor for our moral and ethical lives can feel like swimming against a powerful current. What society celebrates, tolerates, or dismisses as “no big deal” often stands in stark contrast to the timeless truth of Scripture.
As followers of Christ, we aren’t called to blend into the background of our culture. We are called to stand out.
In 1 Thessalonians 4:3-7, the Apostle Paul gives the early church—and us today—a clear, uncompromising directive regarding how we view and handle our bodies, our relationships, and our desires:
“For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God; that no one transgress and wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we told you beforehand and solemnly warned you. For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness.”
Understanding the Call to Sanctification
Paul doesn’t mince words here. He starts with a phrase that many of us spend years praying about: “This is the will of God.” If you’ve ever wondered what God desires for your life, Paul gives a direct answer: your sanctification.
To be sanctified means to be set apart for God’s glory. It means our lives should look fundamentally different from the world around us. God requires all of His people to live by the highest standards of moral and ethical purity in all sexual matters. This isn’t about legalistic rules meant to steal our joy; rather, it is about protecting our hearts, honoring our relationships, and reflecting the holy character of the Creator who designed intimacy in the first place.
Controlling the Body with Honor
The text challenges us to “know how to control” our own bodies in holiness and honor. In a modern society driven by the mantra of “if it feels good, do it,” biblical self-control can feel like an outdated concept. But Paul reminds us that living purely is a matter of honor—honor toward ourselves, honor toward others, and ultimate honor toward God.
When we give in to behaviors that compromise our integrity, we compromise our witness. Because we belong to Him, we must choose not to accept or conform to those behaviors in society that bring disgrace to the Lord. We are called to a higher standard—one marked by respect, restraint, and reverence.
The Danger of Wronging Others
One of the most profound warnings in this passage is that sexual immorality is never a victimless sin. Paul writes that we must not “transgress and wrong” our brother or sister in this matter. Sexual misconduct, exploitation, and impurity objectify people created in the image of God. It treats others as objects for personal gratification rather than souls to be loved and respected.
God takes this seriously. He has called us out of the fog of impurity and invited us to walk in the brilliant light of His holiness.
Walking in Holiness Today
Choosing purity in a highly sexualized world requires intentionality. It means guarding what we watch, being mindful of what we allow into our minds, and setting healthy boundaries in our relationships. It means relying daily on the grace and strength of the Holy Spirit, remembering that when we fail, there is forgiveness, restoration, and the power to start anew.
Let us commit to honoring God with our bodies and our minds, living as a set-apart people who point a broken world toward a beautiful, holy Savior.
A Closing Prayer for Purity
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift of life and the reminder that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. Lord, we live in a world that constantly pulls us away from Your standards of purity and righteousness. We ask for Your strength and grace today to abstain from anything that compromises our walk with You.
Help us to guard our hearts, our minds, and our actions. Give us the courage to reject cultural norms that dishonor Your name, and empower us to live lives that are truly set apart for Your glory. Where we have stumbled, we thank You for Your endless mercy and cleansing grace. Guide our steps, renew our minds, and help us to treat others with the utmost honor and respect. May our lives be a reflection of Your holiness.
In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
