(KJV) 1 Thessalonians 2:18

Wherefore we would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again; but Satan hindered us.

But Satan Stopped Us: Overcoming Spiritual Roadblocks

We have all experienced moments when we felt entirely aligned with God’s will, only to hit an unexpected brick wall. You plan a ministry initiative, set out to reconcile a relationship, or commit to a deeper prayer life, and suddenly everything goes wrong. If you have ever felt targeted just as you were trying to move forward, you are in good company.

In 1 Thessalonians 2:18, the Apostle Paul shares a raw and frustrating reality of ministry: “For we wanted to come to you—certainly I, Paul, did, again and again—but Satan stopped us.”

Paul was an apostle, a spiritual giant, and deeply anointed, yet he still faced demonic roadblocks. But as followers of Christ, understanding how the enemy operates—and how God overrules him—gives us the strategy to push through.

1. The Reality of the Opposition

God allows Satan to war against believers and attempt to stop them or turn them away from doing what God has put in their hearts to do for His kingdom. Spiritual warfare is not a sign that you are doing something wrong; often, it is a sign that you are doing something exactly right. The enemy does not waste arrows on targets that pose no threat to his kingdom. When you step out in faith, expect pushback.

2. The Limits of Satan’s Power

While the enemy’s opposition is real, his power is strictly subject to God’s sovereignty—His final and absolute authority, power, and control to do as He chooses. Satan is a defeated foe on a leash. God can overrule Satan’s activities and turn them into good for His kingdom. What the enemy intends for evil, God routinely repurposes for His glory and your growth.

3. Our Role in the Battle

God chooses to involve His people in this process as He responds to their faithful obedience and prayers. God does not just fight for us; He fights through us. We are not passive victims in spiritual warfare; we are active participants equipped with divine weaponry.

4. How We Overcome

God’s faithful people can overcome Satan’s opposition by:

  • The blood of the Lamb: Resting in the sin-covering, death-defeating sacrifice of Jesus.
  • Our bold testimony: Declaring the truth of who God is and what He has done.
  • Obedient love for God: Choosing faithfulness even when the path is difficult.

Satan’s opposition does not have to succeed and keep us from fulfilling God’s plans for us. Roadblocks are temporary. For this reason, we must pray daily for the power to recognize and overcome the devil’s schemes, standing firm in the victory already won at the cross.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You that my life, my calling, and my steps are ordered by You. Forgive me for the times I have allowed frustration or spiritual roadblocks to make me forget Your sovereignty. I recognize that the enemy wants to block the good work You have placed in my heart, but I declare today that his power is limited and entirely subject to Your command.

I plead the blood of the Lamb over my life, my family, and my ministry. Grant me the discernment to recognize the schemes of the devil and the spiritual stamina to stand firm against them. Father, overrule every obstacle in my path today. Turn what was meant to stop me into a testimony of Your grace and power. Let Your kingdom come and Your will be done in and through me. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
