Living by Faith When Evil Seems to Win: A Reflection on Habakkuk 2:2–20
Have you ever looked around at the world and wondered, “God, why does it feel like evil is winning?”
If you have, you are in good company. The prophet Habakkuk wrestled with the exact same question. He looked at the violence, injustice, and corruption around him and begged God for answers.
In Habakkuk 2, God breaks His silence. He gives Habakkuk a profound answer to why evil seems to dominate the world, and whether it will ultimately wipe out those who do what is good and right.
The Vision: Write Down the Revelation
God begins His response with a very specific instruction: “Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it” (Habakkuk 2:2). God wanted His answer permanently recorded because the truth within it is an absolute guarantee.
Here is the core revelation God gave to Habakkuk: A time is coming when all the wicked will be destroyed, and the only people who will not be shaken are those who trust God and live by His standards.
God pulls back the curtain on the future to reveal two definitive truths:
- The Proud Will Fall: The wicked may look powerful, wealthy, and unstoppable right now, but their foundation is entirely hollow. God lists five “woes” against the corrupt (Habakkuk 2:6–20), exposing that greed, injustice, violence, and idolatry eventually self-destruct under God’s judgment.
- The Righteous Will Live: In stark contrast to the proud, Habakkuk 2:4 contains one of the most powerful declarations in the entire Bible: “Behold the proud, his soul is not upright in him; but the just shall live by his faith.”
Connected by Faith
What does it mean that the just shall live by faith? It means that when the world around us is shaking, true security is found in being related, or connected, to God by our faith.
Living by faith isn’t a passive feeling. It is a functional, daily commitment to trust God’s character and adhere to His standards, even when evil seems to have the upper hand. The wicked trust in their own strength, wealth, and false idols—things that are bound to fail. The righteous put their anchor in the living God.
No matter how chaotic the news looks, or how unfair life feels today, God’s ultimate victory is already decided. As Habakkuk 2:14 promises: “For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.”
Until that day comes, we can find peace knowing that “The Lord is in His holy temple; let all the earth keep silence before Him” (Habakkuk 2:20). He is still on the throne. He sees, He cares, and He will make all things right.
A Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You that even when evil seems to dominate the world, You are still in complete control. Forgive us for the times we let fear and doubt shake our hearts. Help us to anchor ourselves deeply in You.
We pray for the grace to live cleanly by Your standards today. Strengthen our faith so that we remain deeply connected to You, no matter what storms rage around us. We choose to stop trusting in the fragile things of this world and place our total confidence in Your unchanging character.
Thank You for the promise that righteousness will prevail and that Your glory will fill the earth. We rest in Your sovereignty today.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
