The Lord is Near: Living in the Light of His Return

In a world running on a 24-hour cycle of uncertainty, it is easy to find our hearts anchored to the anxieties of today. Yet, the New Testament constantly pulls our focus away from the chaos and directs it toward a definitive, landscape-altering reality: The Lord is near (Philippians 4:5).

When the Apostle Paul penned these words, he wasn’t just giving a vague reminder of comfort. He was setting an active, urgent baseline for how the Church should live. The phrase “the Lord is at hand” carries a dual weight. He is intimately present with us right now by His Spirit, but He is also imminent in His arrival. Jesus is coming back, and His return is certain, sudden, and soon.

The Mark of the Early Church: Holy Expectancy

The New Testament makes it clear that Christ’s return is the ultimate hope meant to govern our daily routines. In Luke 12:35-40, Jesus warns us to keep our lamps burning and be like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet.

This sense of holy expectancy characterized the early Christians. They did not look at the future with dread; they looked upward with intense anticipation. This doctrine of imminency means nothing else needs to happen on the prophetic timeline before Jesus claims His Church. He could return at any moment.

Ready, Working, and Watching

Christ intentionally left the exact day and hour hidden from us (Matthew 24:36). He didn’t do this to make us speculative, but to keep us spiritually alert and consistently dynamic.

Knowing that the timeline is short changes how we spend our time, our money, and our energy. As Paul wrote in Romans 13:12, “The night is nearly over; the day is almost here.” Because the Lord is near, we are called to three distinct postures:

  • Ready: Keeping our hearts pure and anchored in faith so we are not caught off guard.
  • Working: Collaborating in the harvest, sharing the Gospel, and loving our neighbors while it is still day.
  • Watching: Living with an active awareness that our current struggles are temporary and our True King is on the horizon.

When we live with the understanding that Jesus could come today, the legalistic arguments, petty grievances, and daily anxieties of this life begin to lose their grip. Our gentleness and faith naturally become evident to everyone around us because we know our stay here is short.

Let us not grow weary or lulled to sleep by the patterns of this world. The King is coming. Let’s be found working, watching, and ready for His appearance.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the beautiful, rock-solid promise that the Lord is near. Forgive us for the times we have allowed the worries of this world to dim our eternal perspective and lull us into spiritual complacency. Wake up our hearts to the reality of Your imminent return.

Holy Spirit, give us the strength and courage to stand firm, to keep our lamps burning, and to busy ourselves with Your work. Let our lives reflect a gentle, reasonable spirit to everyone we meet because our hope is secure in You. We lift up those around us who are struggling with doubt, fear, or heavy hearts—let them feel Your tangible presence today. Keep us watchful, ready, and faithfully working until the moment we see You face to face. In the mighty and precious name of Jesus, Amen.
