Taste and See: The Global Claim of the Little Scroll

Have you ever stood on the shore, watching the waves crash against the sand, and felt completely small? It is easy to look at our massive world—with its sprawling oceans, shifting geopolitics, and unfolding chaos—and wonder if anyone is truly in control.

In Revelation 10, God provides a striking, visual answer to that very fear. Nestled as an intentional interlude between the heavy judgments of the sixth and seventh trumpets, we encounter an awe-inspiring scene that changes how we view history, the future, and our role in God’s plan today.

The Stance of Total Sovereignty

In Revelation 10:2, John records a magnificent detail about a mighty angel descending from heaven:

“He was holding a little scroll, which lay open in his hand. He planted his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land…”

This is no ordinary posture. By planting one foot on the churning waters of the sea and the other on the solid dirt of the land, this messenger claims universal authority and ownership over all creation. In ancient times, placing your foot upon a territory was a legal sign of taking possession of it.

This dramatic act sends a clear message to a world fractured by fear: Nothing lies outside of God’s jurisdiction. The oceans, the continents, the massive superpowers, and the quietest corners of your everyday life all stand firmly beneath His absolute rule. Even when the world feels completely out of control, God’s sovereign footprint is already pressed deep into the fabric of human history.

The Little Scroll vs. The Seven-Sealed Scroll

What makes this moment unique is what the angel holds: a little scroll that lies wide open.

To understand its weight, we have to look backward and forward in the text. This is not the massive, seven-sealed scroll of destiny we encountered in Revelation 5, which only the Lamb of God was worthy to open. The contents of that grand scroll were meant to be revealed and unsealed as history unfolded.

By contrast, the unique purpose of this small scroll is that it is meant to be eaten.

Later in the chapter, John is commanded to take the open scroll from the angel’s hand and consume it. He is told: “It will turn your stomach sour, but in your mouth it will be as sweet as honey”.

The Sweet and Bitter Reality of Truth

This vivid imagery mirrors the calling of ancient prophets like Ezekiel. Eating the scroll means fully digesting, internalizing, and absorbing God’s message before sharing it with others.

The Sweetness: God’s Word is sweet. His promises of redemption, His ultimate victory over evil, and the hope of a new creation bring ultimate peace and joy.
The Bitterness: Fully digesting reality can be heartbreaking. When we look closely at God’s unfolding plan, it includes severe judgment on sin and the reality of a broken world that rejects Him. True prophecy carries the weight of sobering accountability.

Living with Urgent Purpose

The open, little scroll reminds us that God’s plan is no longer a hidden secret—it has been declared and ready to be announced to the ends of the earth. Just as John was commissioned to “prophesy again about many peoples, nations, languages and kings,” we also carry a profound responsibility.

When we see the mighty messenger standing over land and sea, we can rest knowing the world’s destiny is securely held. But we must also digest the truth of His Word daily, letting its sweet hope comfort us, and its urgent weight move us to share Christ’s redeeming love with a world in desperate need.

A Closing Prayer

Lord God Almighty,
Creator of the heavens, the earth, and the depths of the sea—we praise You because Your footprint is stamped across all of creation. Thank You for the comforting truth that nothing is chaotic to You, and no nation, storm, or trial sits outside of Your sovereign rule.

We ask that You give us a deeper hunger for Your Word. May we truly digest Your truth, finding it sweeter than honey to our souls. Let its reality anchor our hearts when the world feels bitter or uncertain. Break our hearts for what breaks Yours, and fill us with an urgent courage to speak Your truth, share Your grace, and live as bold witnesses of Your looming kingdom.
