START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) Leviticus 19:18
Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the Lord.
The Radical Blueprint of Love: Living Out Leviticus 19:18
When we think of the command to “love your neighbor as yourself,” our minds often jump straight to the New Testament. We picture Jesus speaking to the Pharisees in Matthew 22:39, Paul unpacking the law in Romans 13:9, or James pointing us toward the “royal law” in James 2:8.
But this world-changing command didn’t originate in the New Testament. It tracks all the way back to the ancient, gritty, and practical pages of the Old Testament: Leviticus 19:18.
“Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.” — Leviticus 19:18
Who is My Neighbor?
In our modern world, a neighbor is often just the person who shares a property line or lives down the hall. We can easily drive into our garages, shut the door, and avoid human contact altogether.
But in God’s economy, “neighbor” refers to anyone with whom we come into contact
. It is a definition that expands far beyond physical proximity. Your neighbor is the coworker who gets on your nerves, the cashier at the grocery store, the driver who cuts you off, and the person on the other side of a political or theological divide.
A Plain and Practical Love
Leviticus 19 is an incredible chapter because it doesn’t leave love open to abstract poetic interpretation. It is plain, direct, and boots-on-the-ground practical. If you read the verses leading up to Leviticus 19:18 (Leviticus 19:9-18), God explains exactly what loving your neighbor looks like:
- Generosity: Leaving the edges of your fields for the poor and the stranger (Leviticus 19:9-10).
- Integrity: Dealing honestly, not stealing, and not deceiving one another (Leviticus 19: 11).
- Justice: Paying workers fairly and on time, and refusing to take advantage of the vulnerable, like the deaf or the blind (Leviticus 19:13-14).
- Fairness: Standing up for truth without showing favoritism to the poor or the powerful (Leviticus 19:15).
- Reconciliation: Refusing to spread slander, harbor hidden hatred, take revenge, or carry grudges (Leviticus 19:16-18).
True biblical love isn’t a fleeting feeling or an emotional high. Love is an action verb rooted in how we treat people daily. It is choosing to be friendly, serving those around us, and introducing others to the ultimate love found in Jesus Christ.
The Ultimate Standard
Why do we do this? Leviticus 19:18 ends with a powerful declaration: “I am the Lord.”
We don’t love our neighbors because they deserve it, because they are easy to love, or because they love us back. We love them because God loved us first. When we love our neighbors well, we reflect the very heart of Jesus to a fractured world.
A Closing Prayer for a Neighbor-Loving Heart
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the radical, unconditional love You have poured into our lives. You did not hold a grudge against us, nor did You treat us as our sins deserved. Instead, You extended grace.
Lord, open our eyes to see the people around us the way You see them. Break us out of our comfort zones and our bubbles of isolation. Help us to remember that every person we encounter today is our neighbor, created in Your image.
Give us the strength to lay down resentment, the humility to serve without expecting anything in return, and the courage to live out Your commands practically. May our lives, our words, and our actions reflect Your heart so that others might come to know Your incredible love.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
