BE HOLY / LEVITICUS / 19:2

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Leviticus 19:2

Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them, Ye shall be holy: for I the Lord your God am holy.

Cultivating the Character of God: What It Means to “Be Holy”

We live in a world that constantly pulls our attention in a thousand different directions, urging us to conform to its trends, habits, and mindsets. Yet, cutting through the noise of culture is a timeless, radical command from God that stops us in our tracks: “Be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy” (Leviticus 19:2).

At first glance, the word “holy” can feel intimidating. It might evoke images of rigid rules, unreachable perfection, or a life stripped of joy. But when we look closer at Scripture, we find that God’s call to holiness is actually an invitation to the truest, most beautiful version of life possible.

Understanding Holiness: Wholeness and Dedication

To be holy means to possess moral and spiritual purity. It carries the idea of wholeness—being integrated and complete in our devotion—and separation. This doesn’t mean hiding away from society, but rather separating ourselves from evil and dedicating our lives entirely to God’s standards.

God calls His people to be like Him and to reflect His character. To do this requires a conscious choice: separating ourselves from the ungodly customs and behaviors of the people around us and intentionally doing what God says is right.

A Call Rooted in Love and History

This mandate isn’t a new concept. The call to holiness was first given to Adam and Eve, who were created in God’s image so they could reflect His character and relate to Him deeply (Genesis 1:26). From the very beginning, we were designed to mirror our Creator.

Throughout Scripture, this thread continues:

  • The Foundation: God reminds us of our identity in Him: “For I am the Lord your God. Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am holy” (Leviticus 11:44).
  • The New Testament Echo: Every generation of believers is called to step into this legacy and “be imitators of God” (Ephesians 5:1).
  • The Daily Transformation: Jesus elevates this call in the Gospels, and Paul reminds us to offer our lives as living sacrifices, completely transformed and renewed (Matthew 5:48; Romans 12:1-2).

Choosing holiness isn’t about legalism or earning God’s favor. Love for God is what gives His people the initial will and ongoing desire to live this way. When we love Him, we naturally want to look like Him.

Reflecting the Creator

Holiness is about who you belong to. When we choose to live by God’s standards rather than the world’s, we become living signposts pointing others toward His love, justice, and purity. It is a daily decision to say “no” to the broken patterns of culture and “yes” to the beautiful character of God.

A Closing Prayer for Holiness

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for creating us in Your image and inviting us into a deep, restored relationship with You. Lord, Your holiness is breathtaking, pure, and good. Today, we hear Your call to “be holy as You are holy,” and we admit that we cannot do this on our own strength.

Fill our hearts with a profound love for You that shifts our desires. Give us the courage to separate ourselves from behaviors, language, and mindsets that do not honor You. Help us to stand firm against ungodly customs and instead reflect Your compassion, truth, and righteousness to a world that desperately needs to see You.

Transform our minds daily. May we be true imitators of Your character in our homes, our workplaces, and our communities.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
