(KJV) John 11:35
Jesus wept.
The Heart of the God-Man: Finding Comfort in Jesus’ Tears
John 11:35 contains the shortest sentence in the Bible, yet it carries the heaviest weight: “Jesus wept.”
When we experience loss, sorrow, and deep grief, it is easy to feel entirely alone. We might wonder if God sees us, or if He cares about the pain ripping through our hearts. This simple, profound statement gives us our answer. It reveals the deep sympathy God feels for His people in their darkest moments.
Silent Tears, Immense Sympathy
The Greek word used here for “wept” is dakruo. It means that Jesus burst into tears, and then wept silently.
Think about that imagery. This wasn’t a superficial show of emotion. This was a raw, visceral response to the sting of death and the heartbreak of His friends.
This should be a profound comfort to anyone walking through a season of sorrow today. Christ feels the exact same sympathy for you right now that He felt for the grieving relatives of Lazarus over two thousand years ago. He loves you that much. He does not look at your grief with detachment; He shares in it.
The Deity Who Feels
What makes this moment truly staggering is where it is recorded. This verse occurs in the Gospel of John—the very book that stresses Jesus’ deity and God-nature more than any other book of the Bible.
This wasn’t just a good man crying. This was Jesus—the God-man, the One through whom everything in the universe was created (John 1:3)—weeping for His friends. The Creator of the stars sat in the dust and let tears run down His face.
Our God is not a distant, unfeeling force. As we see throughout Scripture (such as when He wept over Jerusalem in Luke 19:41), God has a deep, emotional, and sympathetic love for all of humankind. When you cry, you do not cry to an empty sky. You cry to a Savior who knows the taste of tears.
A Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the comfort of John 11:35. Thank You that we do not serve a distant or cold Creator, but a Savior who broke down and wept alongside those He loved.
Lord, for anyone reading this who is currently carrying the heavy weight of loss, sorrow, or grief, I ask that Your Holy Presence wrap around them tightly. Comfort them with the profound truth that You see their pain, You care about their heartache, and You walk with them through the valley of the shadow of death.
Remind us daily of Your deep, emotional, and sympathetic love for us. When our own tears fall, may we find rest knowing that the God-man who conquered the grave is the very same Savior who understands our sorrow.
In Jesus’ comforting and powerful name, Amen.
