Built on the True Foundation: Reflecting on Ephesians 2:20
When we look at a grand, historic building, our eyes are naturally drawn to its towering pillars, beautiful arches, and intricate details. Yet, the most critical part of the structure is completely hidden from view: the foundation. If the foundation is weak, shifting, or uneven, the entire building will eventually collapse.
The Apostle Paul uses this exact imagery in Ephesians 2:20, reminding us that the Church of Jesus Christ is “built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.”
What does it mean for us today to be a church built on the foundation of the apostles?
The Unchanging Blueprint of Truth
A church can only be a true church if it stands firmly on the Christ-inspired, infallible revelation given to the first apostles. These “sent ones” received a direct commission from Jesus Himself to deliver His original message and establish His New Testament church. God used them to write the very scriptures we rely on today.
Because they were the foundational stones of the church, their message—preserved perfectly in the New Testament—is the authentic, original testimony of Jesus Christ. It is not a temporary message that expires with time. It is a universal truth valid for all people, in all cultures, across all generations.
Every believer and every local church today is entirely dependent on the words, message, and faith of these first apostles. We do not get to reinvent the gospel; we are called to inherit it, live it, and pass it on.
Three Marks of an Apostolic Church
How do we know if a modern church is truly aligned with this ancient foundation? According to Scripture, a true community of believers will demonstrate three distinct commitments:
1. Devotion to the Teachings
True believers must agree with and earnestly strive to follow the New Testament revelation concerning Christ. In the book of Acts, we read that the very first believers “devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching” (Acts 2:42). To reject the teachings preserved by the New Testament apostles is, ultimately, to reject the Lord Himself.
2. Continuation of the Mission
We are called to carry on the apostolic mission—being sent out into the world with Christ’s message and authority. This means actively sharing the original New Testament gospel through faithful speaking, preaching, and teaching, all powered by the Holy Spirit.
3. Defense of the Faith
We must not only believe the gospel, but also guard it fiercely against false ideas and modern distortions. The original revelation given to the apostles can never be replaced, nullified, or overridden by later testimonies, philosophies, or supposed new revelations. It is fixed, certain, and completely reliable.
Standing Firm
In a world where truths are constantly shifting and culture tries to rewrite the rules, the church has the solemn responsibility—and the incredible privilege—of obeying and testifying to this God-given revelation. The gospel given to the New Testament apostles remains the enduring source of life, truth, and direction for us today. Let us make sure our lives and our churches are built on nothing less.
🧎 A Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
We thank You for the beautiful, unshakeable design of Your Church. Thank You for Jesus Christ, our Chief Cornerstone, who holds everything together, and thank You for the faithful foundation of the apostles and prophets who preserved Your true message for us.
Lord, keep us anchored. Protect our hearts and our churches from the drifting currents of the world. Give us the wisdom to discern Your truth, the courage to defend it against falsehood, and the passion to share it with a world in need. Help us to live lives that honor the foundation we stand upon, always relying on the power of Your Holy Spirit.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
