WORSHIP … IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH / JOHN 4:23-24

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DEVOTION

(KJV) John 4:23-24

But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. 24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

Worship in Spirit and Truth: Moving Beyond the External

Have you ever caught yourself going through the motions during a worship service? Maybe you’re standing in the right building, singing the right songs, and lifting your hands at the right time—but your mind is completely elsewhere.

In John 4:23-24, Jesus delivers a revolutionary truth to a Samaritan woman at a well, forever changing how we connect with God:

“But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Jesus makes one thing abundantly clear: the physical place of worship is not the issue; God’s primary concern is our spiritual attitude. God isn’t looking at the architecture of our buildings or the quality of our sound systems. He is looking at our hearts.

1. Worshiping “In Spirit”

Worshiping “in spirit” points directly to the depth at which true worship occurs. It cannot be skin-deep or purely external. True worship must come from the heart.

When we worship in spirit, our response reflects a godly character and a deep inner devotion to God. It requires us to step into His presence in complete openness, allowing our spirit to be led and directed by the Holy Spirit. Above all, it means shifting our focus away from ourselves—our preferences, our comfort, and our distractions—and anchoring it fully on God’s character and attributes. It is a heartfelt expression of our own spirit connecting directly to God’s Spirit.

2. Worshiping “In Truth”

Worshiping in spirit is only half of the equation; it must be paired with truth. In the original Greek, the word for truth is aletheia.

Truth is not a fluid concept; it is a primary characteristic of God’s very nature. We see this throughout Scripture:

  • Personified in Christ: Jesus is the definition of truth made flesh (John 14:6).
  • Descriptive of the Holy Spirit: He is explicitly called the Spirit of Truth (John 14:17).
  • The Heart of the Gospel: The message of Christ is rooted entirely in truth (John 8:32).

True worship must be a reflection of and a direct response to the truth of the Father, as revealed through the Son, and received into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.

The Foundation of Real Worship

This leaves us with a vital warning: emotionalism or sincerity alone is not enough. Those who encourage worship that is not firmly based upon the truth and teachings of God’s Word have rejected the only legitimate foundation for true worship. We cannot worship a God we do not truly know, and we cannot know Him apart from His Word.

When we align our inner spirit with His absolute truth, our worship transforms from a weekly routine into a powerful, life-changing encounter with the Living God.

A Closing Prayer for True Worship

Heavenly Father,

Thank You that You do not confine Your presence to a specific building or a mountain, but that You seek those who will worship You in spirit and in truth. Lord, forgive us for the times we have offered You empty rituals, distracted minds, and superficial praise.

We ask that You evaluate our hearts today. Strip away any hypocrisy and help us approach You with complete openness. Let Your Holy Spirit direct our inner devotion, keeping our eyes fixed entirely on Your beautiful character and attributes.

Anchor us deeply in Your Word. Protect us from false foundations and help us to always respond to the truth revealed in Your Son, Jesus Christ. May our lives and our praise be a genuine reflection of Your Spirit and Your Truth.

In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

SAMARITANS WORSHIP WHAT YOU DO NOT KNOW / JOHN 4:22

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) John 4:22

Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.

Finding God in the Whole Story: Why True Worship Requires the Full Revelation

True worship is built on knowing who God really is, not just the parts of Him we choose to accept.

In John 4:22, Jesus looks at a Samaritan woman and delivers a sharp but loving correction: “You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.”

At first glance, this can sound exclusive or harsh. But when we look closer at the context, we find a profound truth about how we approach God today.

The Danger of a Fragmented Faith

The Samaritans didn’t have the whole picture. The Samaritan Bible contained only the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Old Testament). By discarding the books of the Prophets and the Writings, they closed their eyes to centuries of God’s unfolding story.

Because of this failure to accept much of God’s revelation, they knew very little about Him. They were trying to worship a God they had intentionally placed in a box.

We often do the same thing today. We pick our favorite verses, highlight the attributes of God that make us comfortable, and ignore the parts of Scripture that challenge us. But a fragmented Bible leads to a fragmented faith. To worship God truly, we must accept everything He has revealed about Himself.

The Source of Salvation

When Jesus says “salvation is from the Jews,” He isn’t showing favoritism. He is simply stating a historical and theological fact: the Messiah, or Christ, would be a Jew.

God chose a specific lineage to bring the Savior into the world. Jesus came to fulfill the law and the prophets—the very books the Samaritans rejected. Salvation came through the Jewish line, but it was always intended to rescue the whole world, including the woman at the well.

Worship in Spirit and Truth

We cannot worship a God we do not know, and we cannot know Him if we refuse to read His words. True worship requires us to open the whole Bible, submit to the whole counsel of God, and let Him reveal Himself on His terms, not ours.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Forgive us for the times we have tried to reshape You in our own image. Forgive us for picking and choosing which parts of Your truth to believe and follow. We thank You for the gift of Your complete word, and for the ultimate revelation of Your love through Jesus Christ, the Messiah.

Open our hearts to receive the full measure of Your truth. Help us to know You deeper every day, so that our worship may be genuine, anchored in truth, and pleasing to You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

WATER … ETERNAL LIFE / JOHN 4:14

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) John 4:14

But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

The Flow that Never Fails: Cultivating a Lifestyle of Drinking Living Water

We all know what it feels like to be parched. After a long workout, a stressful day, or a dry season in life, nothing beats the satisfaction of a cold glass of water. But physical water only satisfies us for a moment. Before long, the thirst returns.

In John 4:14, Jesus offers a radical alternative to this endless cycle: “But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

This isn’t just about a one-time drink. Jesus is inviting us into a completely transformed way of living.

Understanding the Spiritual Water

The “water” Jesus speaks of is spiritual life—the profound, soul-satisfying joy and salvation prophesied long ago in Isaiah 12:3: “With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.”

To truly experience this life, Jesus tells us we must “drink” (John 7:37). But if we look closely at the original language, the depth of His invitation becomes even clearer.

A Lifestyle, Not a Moment

In the original Greek text, the word for “drink” (pineto, from pino) is written in the present imperative tense. In the ancient world, this specific grammar structure denoted a continuing or repeated action.

This means drinking the living water is not a momentary, single experience. It is not something we did once years ago at an altar, or something we only do for an hour on Sunday mornings. Drinking the water of life is an ongoing lifestyle.

To keep our souls refreshed, we need regular, daily interaction with the Source of the living water: Jesus Christ Himself.

The Danger of Disconnection

What happens when we neglect this relationship? If we drift away from prayer, step back from scripture, and become disconnected from Christ, the flow stops.

No one can continue to experience the vibrant life of the Spirit while ignoring the Source. Without regular connection to Jesus, we will inevitably dry up spiritually. We risk becoming what the Apostle Peter somberly describes as “springs without water” (2 Peter 2:17)—looking like a source of life on the outside, but completely empty on the inside.

If you feel dry, weary, or empty today, the solution isn’t to look for fulfillment in the things of this world. The solution is to return to the well. Turn your heart back to Jesus, open His Word, and take a deep drink of His grace today.

A Closing Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus Christ, to be our Living Water. Forgive us for the times we have tried to satisfy our deepest spiritual longings with the shallow, broken cisterns of this world. We recognize today that nothing apart from You can truly sustain us.

Holy Spirit, help us to cultivate a lifestyle of daily dependency on Jesus. Teach us to abide in Him, to seek His face regularly, and to stay deeply connected to the Source of life. Guard our hearts against spiritual drift and dry seasons. Fill us daily until Your joy overflows from our lives into a thirsty world. We choose to drink from Your well today.

In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.

SAMARITAN WOMAN / JOHN 4:7

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) John 4:7

There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.

Breaking Barriers: What the Samaritan Woman Teaches Us About Jesus’ Passion for the Lost

We live in a world deeply divided by culture, race, and social status. It is easy to stay comfortable within our own circles, speaking only to those who look, think, and act like us. But when we look at the life of Jesus, we see a completely different pattern.

In John 4:7, a simple request unlocks one of the most profound theological conversations in the New Testament: “A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, ‘Give Me a drink.’”

On the surface, this looks like a routine interaction. In reality, it was a scandalous disruption of first-century cultural norms. By analyzing this conversation, we discover Jesus’ burning passion for the spiritually lost and a powerful blueprint for how we should live out our faith today.

1. Jesus Intentionally Breaks Cultural Boundaries

In the ancient Near East, a Jewish man—let alone a Rabbi—would not publicly initiate a conversation with a Samaritan woman. The animosity between Jews and Samaritans ran deep, stretching back centuries (2 Kings 17:24; Luke 9:53). Furthermore, women in that society held very low social and legal standing.

Yet, Jesus completely ignored these rigid societal walls. His conversation reveals His deep desire to bring people of all races, cultures, and backgrounds into a personal relationship with God. He did not see a cultural enemy or a social outcast; He saw a soul in desperate need of living water.

2. A Passion Greater Than Physical Needs

Later in the chapter, Jesus’ disciples return with food and urge Him to eat. His response in John 4:34 reveals His core identity: “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.”

Jesus’ consuming, foundational passion was to seek and save the spiritually lost (Luke 15; Proverbs 11:30). Fulfilling His heavenly Father’s purpose was far more urgent and satisfying to Him than physical food and drink. He was willing to endure physical exhaustion and societal scorn just to reach one broken heart at a well.

3. The Call to Follow His Example

The story of the Samaritan woman doesn’t end with her conversion. The moment she realized Jesus was the Messiah, she left her water jar, ran back to her town, and told everyone, “Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?” (John 4:28-30).

She became an immediate witness. Just like her, we are called to look around us. The fields are ripe for harvest, and people all around us are hurting, isolated, and searching for truth. We must not delay, let fear hold us back, or be unwilling to speak into the spiritual needs of others. Jesus is the only one who can meet those needs—and He wants to use us to share that good news.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus, to break through every barrier of sin, shame, and culture to rescue us. Forgive us for the times we let comfort or prejudice keep us from sharing Your love with others. Give us Jesus’ heart for the lost. Help us to see people the way He sees them—as souls worthy of love and truth. Grant us the boldness of the Samaritan woman to share what You have done in our lives, so that others may come to know Jesus as the Savior of the world. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

THEY DID NOT LISTEN TO HIM / EXODUS 6:9

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Exodus 6:9

And Moses spake so unto the children of Israel: but they hearkened not unto Moses for anguish of spirit, and for cruel bondage.

Rescued by Grace: When Our Faith is Too Weak to Listen

We have all been there. A season of life hits so hard, the pressure builds so high, and the pain runs so deep that when someone tries to offer a word of encouragement or a promise of hope, we simply cannot take it in. Our spirits are too crushed to listen.

This is exactly where the children of Israel found themselves in Exodus 6:9.

God had just given Moses an incredible, sweeping declaration of redemption. He promised to break their chains, deliver them from slavery, and claim them as His own chosen people. It was a message filled with absolute certainty, anchored by the ultimate authority: “I am the LORD.”

But look at how the people responded:

“Moses reported this to the Israelites, but they did not listen to him because of their discouragement and harsh labor.” (Exodus 6:9, NIV)

They did not listen. Not because they were actively rebellious, but because of anguish of spirit and cruel bondage. Their circumstances were so overwhelming that their ears—and their hearts—were entirely closed to hope.

Saved by Grace, Not Great Faith

If the story of the Exodus depended on the great faith of the Israelites, the journey would have ended right there in the mud bricks of Egypt. But the beautiful truth embedded in this passage is that God did not rescue Israel because they had great faith.

He rescued them because of His grace—His completely undeserved favor—and His unwavering faithfulness to His promises. Centuries earlier, God had made a covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Genesis 17:1-8; 50:24). When Israel groaned under the weight of slavery, God remembered that covenant.

At the starting line of their deliverance, their faith was incredibly weak. They couldn’t even muster up the strength to listen to Moses. Yet, God did not abandon them for their lack of belief. Instead, He stepped into Egypt and systematically revealed His sovereign power and intimate concern through the ten plagues.

Step by step, plague by plague, God built up their fragile faith. By the time they reached the night of the Passover, that weak faith had matured into active obedience (Exodus 12:28). God met them in their despair, carried them when they couldn’t walk, and provided the faith they lacked.

The Beautiful Parallel to Our Salvation

This Old Testament reality mirrors our spiritual reality today. Just like ancient Israel, we are rescued by grace through faith—and even that faith is a gift from God, so that no one can boast (Ephesians 2:8-9).

Jesus did not wait for us to have our lives perfectly together, nor did He wait for us to display flawless, unshakable faith before dying for us. While we were still helpless, trapped in the spiritual bondage of sin, Christ died for the ungodly (Romans 5:6).

When you find yourself in a season where your spirit is broken, when the “harsh labor” of life makes it impossible to hear the promises of God, take comfort in Exodus 6:9. Your deliverance does not rest on the strength of your grip on God. It rests entirely on the strength of His unbreakable grip on you. He is faithful even when we are faithless (2 Timothy 2:13).

A Closing Prayer for the Broken Spirit

Heavenly Father,

We come to You today acknowledging the heavy seasons of life. Lord, there are days when our bondage feels too cruel, our work feels too harsh, and our spirits are too anguished to listen to Your promises. Forgive us for the times our faith wavers and our vision is clouded by our immediate pain.

Thank You that our salvation and our security do not depend on the strength of our own faith, but on Your unmeritied grace and perfect faithfulness. Thank You for remembering Your promises even when we forget them.

When our spirits are crushed, we ask that You would do for us what we cannot do for ourselves. Gently reveal Your power and Your deep love to us. Rebuild our fragile trust, quiet our anxious hearts, and fight for us when we are too weary to move. We rest knowing that You are the LORD, and You are faithful to bring us through. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.

I WILL TAKE YOU AS MY OWN PEOPLE AND I WILL BE YOUR GOD / EXODUS 6:7

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Exodus 6:7

And I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to you a God: and ye shall know that I am the Lord your God, which bringeth you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.

Chosen and Redeemed: Discovering Our True Identity in Exodus 6:7

Have you ever felt completely trapped by your circumstances, struggling against a burden you simply couldn’t lift on your own?

If so, you are in familiar company. Thousands of years ago, the people of Israel found themselves in the exact same position. Broken by generational bondage in Egypt, they were entirely helpless to overcome the superpower that enslaved them. They could not fight their way out, nor could they negotiate their freedom.

But when human strength reaches its absolute limit, divine grace steps in.

In the book of Exodus, God responds to the groans of His suffering people. He reminds Moses of His ancient covenant and makes a series of radical promises. Among them is a declaration that uncovers the ultimate meaning of the entire Exodus story:

“I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God.” — Exodus 6:7

The Purpose of the Rescue

It is easy to look at the story of the Exodus and focus purely on the physical liberation—the plagues, the parting of the Red Sea, and the dramatic escape from Pharaoh. While God absolutely cared about their physical suffering, the rescue was never just about a change of geography. It was about a change of ownership.

By breaking the chains of Egypt, God was transferring Israel out of cruel bondage and adopting them into His own family. Consider the depth of what this meant for the Israelites:

  • They belonged to Him by Creation: He was the Author of their lives.
  • They belonged to Him by Election: He chose them out of love, honoring His covenant with their forefathers.
  • They belonged to Him by Redemption: He bought them back out of slavery with a mighty hand.

When the people later stood at the base of Mount Sinai, God reminded them of this new identity, calling them His “treasured possession” (Exodus 19:5). In return for this radical love, the people promised to walk in obedience—not to earn their salvation, but as a response of gratitude to the One who had already saved them.

The Greater Exodus: From Shadow to Reality

The dramatic rescue of Israel from Egypt was a beautiful foreshadowing of a much greater rescue mission. The Old Testament Exodus is a vibrant map showing us how Jesus Christ provides spiritual redemption and true freedom for all of humanity today.

Just as Israel was entirely helpless to free themselves from Pharaoh, we are completely powerless to overcome the grip of sin, shame, and the brokenness of this world on our own.

Through His death on the cross and His resurrection, Jesus acted as our ultimate Redeemer. He stepped into our captivity, paid the price for our freedom, and broke the power of darkness. When we accept Christ’s sacrifice and trust Him to lead our lives, the ownership of our hearts shifts. We no longer belong to our past, our mistakes, or our anxieties. We belong to God.

Walking in Your True Identity

Because you belong to God, you can anchor your soul in His unchanging love and promises. You are not an orphan navigating a harsh world alone. You are adopted, valued, and fiercely protected by the Creator of the universe.

If you are carrying a heavy load today, remember that you serve a God who hears your groans, remembers His promises, and has already claimed you as His own. Let that truth reshape how you view yourself and your future.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for being a God who sees, hears, and rescues. We praise You because when we were completely helpless and trapped by our own sin and burdens, You did not abandon us. Thank You for sending Jesus to be our ultimate Redeemer, breaking our chains and bringing us into true freedom.

Lord, let the truth of Exodus 6:7 sink deep into our hearts today. Remind us that we are Your people, and You are our God. When the voices of fear, shame, or past failures try to tell us who we are, let Your voice speak louder. Help us to walk confidently in our identity as Your treasured possession. Give us the grace to live lives of joyful obedience that honor the incredible price You paid to rescue us.

In Jesus’ mighty name we pray, Amen.

BY MY NAME THE LORD I DID NOT MAKE MYSELF KNOW TO THEM / EXODUS 6:3

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Exodus 6:3

And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name Jehovah was I not known to them.

The Power of the Promise-Keeper: Understanding Exodus 6:3

In Exodus 6:3, God speaks a profound and easily misunderstood truth to Moses: “I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob as God Almighty, but by my name the LORD I did not make myself known to them.”

At first glance, this verse might seem confusing. How could the patriarchs not know the name “LORD” (the Hebrew Yahweh) when it appears throughout the book of Genesis?

The answer doesn’t mean Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob had never heard the word. Instead, it means they had not yet lived out the full weight, character, and power behind that name.

From “God Almighty” to “The Lord”

The names of God in scripture are not just labels; they reveal His character and power.

  • God Almighty (El Shaddai): The patriarchs primarily knew God by this name. It emphasizes His supreme power to fulfill what He has promised. Abraham experienced God’s almighty power when Isaac was born against all human odds. He knew God was strong enough to keep His word, even if he didn’t live to see the entire covenant fulfilled.
  • The LORD (Yahweh): This is God’s sacred, covenant-keeping name. It focuses deeply on redemption, rescue, and bringing His people into a close, personal relationship with Him.

While Abraham received the covenant, Moses and the Israelites were about to witness the absolute fulfillment of it. They were going to watch Yahweh actively rescue them from bondage in Egypt.

Living the Reality of His Name

There is a massive difference between knowing someone’s name and knowing their character through shared experience.

You might know that God is a healer or a provider because you read it in a book. But when you are broke and a bill gets paid, or when you are sick and your body mends, you truly know Him as Provider and Healer.

The generation of Exodus was about to transition from hearing about a promising God to experiencing a covenant-keeping Deliverer. Today, we serve that very same God—the one who not only makes promises through His power but faithfully brings them to pass because of His unchanging love for us.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for being El Shaddai—the God Almighty who is more than enough to handle every detail of our lives. Thank You for being Yahweh, our loyal, covenant-keeping Lord who rescues us and pulls us into relationship with You. Forgive us for the times we treat Your name as just a word rather than a reflection of Your ultimate power. Help us to trust Your timing, knowing that what You promise in power, You will always perform in faithfulness. We rest secure in who You are today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

YOU HAVE NOT RESCUED YOUR PEOPLE AT ALL / EXODUS 5:23

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Exodus 5:23

For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in thy name, he hath done evil to this people; neither hast thou delivered thy people at all.

When the Rescue Feels Like Ruin: Trusting God When Things Get Worse

Have you ever stepped out in faith, fully expecting a miracle, only to watch your situation completely fall apart?

You prayed for your marriage, and the arguments grew worse. You asked for financial breakthrough, and an unexpected bill arrived. You stood on God’s promises, but instead of relief, you were met with deeper disappointment.

If you are walking through that kind of confusing frustration today, you are in good company. In Exodus, Moses found himself in the exact same position. God had promised to rescue Israel from slavery, but when Moses demanded their release, Pharaoh didn’t let them go. Instead, he made their labor twice as hard, taking away their straw while demanding the same daily quota of bricks.

The people turned on Moses in anger, and a heartbroken Moses turned to God with a raw, gut-wrenching question:

“For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has done evil to this people, and you have not rescued your people at all.” — Exodus 5:23

The Gap Between the Promise and the Provision

Moses was experiencing a painful spiritual reality: God’s promise to rescue His people seemed more unlikely than ever because the situation was becoming worse rather than better.

From a human perspective, it looked like God had failed. But from a divine perspective, God was setting the stage for a display of His power that Israel would never forget.

Through these discouraging circumstances, God wanted to teach the people that often before He sends His miracles and the victory of freedom, there will be troubles and difficulties that appear to make the situation hopeless. Why? Because when deliverance finally comes, there will be absolutely no doubt that it was the hand of God, and not human effort, that brought the victory.

Faith in the Deep Dark

When we find ourselves in the gap between God’s promise and His provision, we face a critical choice. Will we trust what we see, or will we trust what He said?

Through times of disappointment, a believer must have faith in God’s Word and continue to trust Him to work out His plans in His own time. The temporary escalation of your trouble does not mean God has abandoned you. It often means the enemy knows his time is short, and God is about to move.

We can anchor our souls in the truth of Romans 8:28: “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”

“All things” includes the brickyards. It includes the pharaohs of our lives. It includes the moments where it feels like God hasn’t rescued us at all. Hold on. The story isn’t over at Exodus 5. Exodus 6 is coming, and with it, the reminder of who God is: “I am the Lord, and I will bring you out.”

A Closing Prayer for the Waiting

Lord God,

You see the person reading this right now whose heart is heavy and whose faith is tested. Father, when circumstances worsen and our prayers seem to return void, it is so easy to cry out like Moses and feel like You have not rescued us at all. Forgive us for our unbelief, and comfort us in our pain.

We choose today to look past our current difficulties and fix our eyes on Your unchanging character. Teach us to trust that You are working behind the scenes, even when the situation looks entirely hopeless. Give us the supernatural strength to wait on Your perfect timing, knowing that You cause all things to work together for our good and Your ultimate glory. We declare that our trust is in Your Word, not our circumstances.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

IS THIS WHY YOU SENT ME? / EXODUS 5:22

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Exodus 5:22

And Moses returned unto the Lord, and said, Lord, wherefore hast thou so evil entreated this people? why is it that thou hast sent me?

When Obeying God Makes Things Worse: Finding Faith in Exodus 5:22

We have all been there. You finally take that leap of faith, obey what you feel God is calling you to do, and instead of a red carpet rolling out, the floor drops beneath you. Your obedience is met with immediate, crushing resistance.

In those moments, our hearts naturally echo the raw, painful question Moses asked in Exodus 5:22:

“Moses returned to the Lord and said, ‘Why, Lord, why have you brought trouble on this people? Is this why you sent me?‘”

The Trap of Immediate Success

Moses was discouraged. He had just confronted Pharaoh, demanding the release of the Israelites, only for Pharaoh to double their workload by withholding straw for their bricks. The people turned on Moses, and Moses, in turn, questioned God.

But if we look closer, Moses’ disappointment stemmed from a selective memory. He had either ignored or completely forgotten what God told him at the burning bush. God had already warned him: “I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go unless a mighty hand compels him” (Exodus 3:19).

God never promised Moses an easy, one-and-done victory. He promised deliverance, but He also promised a battle. Moses expected immediate success, and when trouble came instead, he doubted his calling.

The Guarantee of Hardship

Like Moses, we often buy into the unwritten myth that path-of-least-resistance equals God’s will. We assume that if we are suffering, we must have taken a wrong turn.

However, Scripture consistently tells us the exact opposite. God’s Word explicitly prepares us for friction when we walk in obedience:

  • Acts 14:22 reminds us that “we must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God.”
  • Jesus directly tells us in John 16:33, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
  • Paul warns that “everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted” (2 Timothy 3:12).

Hardship is not evidence of God’s absence; often, it is a sign that your obedience is actively disrupting the status quo of the enemy.

Hold On to the Promise, Not the Process

When you find yourself asking, “Is this why you sent me?”, take a step back. Remember that God’s timeline is bigger than the current setback. The resistance you are experiencing today does not mean God has abandoned you or that you misheard Him. It just means the story isn’t over yet.

Don’t let short-term trouble make you forget long-term promises. Hold steady, keep obeying, and watch how He uses the hardship to reveal His mighty hand.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,
We come to You in moments of confusion and weariness. Lord, when obedience brings trouble instead of ease, it is so easy for our hearts to get discouraged and ask, “Why did You send me here?” Forgive us for the times we forget Your warnings and doubt Your goodness when hardships come.

Grant us the spiritual stamina to endure the friction of this world. Remind us that trouble is not a sign of Your failure, but a canvas for Your miracles. Strengthen our faith today so that we can stand firm on Your promises, even when the process is painful. We trust that You have already overcome the world. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

THIS IS WHAT THE LORD – THE GOD OF ISRAEL SAYS / EXODUS 5:1

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Exodus 5:1

And afterward Moses and Aaron went in, and told Pharaoh, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may hold a feast unto me in the wilderness.

Let My People Go: The Ultimate Clash of Gods

Exodus 5:1 contains one of the most powerful and revolutionary declarations in all of scripture: “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Let my people go.'”

At first glance, we often view the story of the Exodus as a political or humanitarian struggle—a captive nation seeking freedom from a ruthless dictator. While that is true, the text reveals an even deeper reality. The Exodus was fundamentally a theological conflict between the true Living God and the false gods of Egypt.

The Clash of Two Kingdoms

In ancient Egypt, Pharaoh was not just a political leader; he was revered as a living god—the human manifestation of the sun god, Re. He held absolute power over life, death, and the economy. When Moses and Aaron delivered God’s message, Pharaoh’s response in Exodus 5:2 was dripping with arrogance: “Who is the Lord, that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord and I will not let Israel go.”

Because Pharaoh held the Israelites in brutal slavery, he mistakenly reasoned that his gods were superior. In the ancient world, if your nation was winning, it meant your gods were stronger. Pharaoh looked at his vast empire and Israel’s chains and assumed he had already won.

Defeating the Idols

He could not have been more wrong. The ten plagues were not random acts of ecological chaos; they were a targeted, systematic judgment against the deities of Egypt. The Lord was showing both the Egyptians and His own people that He is the supreme authority over creation.

  • The Nile River was worshipped as a source of life (the god Hapi); God turned it to blood.
  • The Frogs were associated with fertility and creation (the goddess Heqet); God turned them into a suffocating nuisance.
  • The Sun was the domain of Pharaoh’s supreme patron (the god Re); God blotted it out with three days of thick, absolute darkness.

One by one, the Lord defeated them all. He proved that the idols of this world have no real power, no voice, and no authority.

What is Holding You Captive?

Today, we may not bow down to statues of Ra or Hapi, but we still face “pharaohs” in our daily lives. We battle cultural idols, systemic oppressions, deep-seated anxieties, and sins that try to convince us they hold ultimate power over our future.

When those forces tell you that you belong to them, remember Exodus 5:1. The God who shattered the power of Egypt is the same God who fights for you today. He still looks at everything holding you in chains and declares: Let my people go.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

You are the Lord, the God of Israel, the King of Kings, and the Lord of Lords. There is no god like You in heaven above or on the earth below. We praise You because You are more powerful than any system, idol, or stronghold that attempts to keep us in bondage.

Forgive us for the times we look at our circumstances and assume the enemy has won. Today, we ask You to break the chains of fear, addiction, doubt, and oppression in our lives. Remind us of Your supreme power and help us to walk in the freedom that You have already won for us.

We declare that You are our Deliverer. In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray, Amen.
