THE SPIRIT WHO CALLS OUT “ABBA FATHER” / GALATIANS 4:6

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Galatians 4:6

And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

The Spirit Who Cries Out, “Abba, Father”

Have you ever stopped to consider the sheer magnitude of what it means to be a child of God?

In Galatians 4:6, the Apostle Paul drops a beautiful truth that changes how we approach God: “And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba! Father!’”

As believers, we aren’t just rescued servants or distant followers. We are adopted into the family. And to make sure we truly feel, understand, and experience this reality, God has given us a new guide and guardian: the Holy Spirit.

A New Family, A New Guide

Before Christ, humanity was bound under the strict guardianship of the law. But now, through faith, we have received the full rights of sons and daughters. We have a new “guardian”—the Spirit of God (Romans 8:9).

One of the Holy Spirit’s primary tasks is to cultivate filial love within us. This is a deep, family-centered affection that strips away fear and replaces it with the warmth, confidence, and intimacy of a child who knows they are safe in their father’s arms.

The Depth of “Abba”

Paul uses a unique pairing of words here: the Aramaic term Abba combined with the Greek word for father (pater).

  • Abba was the very word Jesus used in the Garden of Gethsemane when praying to His heavenly Father (Mark 14:36). It is a term of ultimate intimacy, respect, and dependency.
  • Bringing these two languages together captures a depth of affection that transcends culture. It expresses a confidence that allows us to cry out to God in our darkest moments, knowing He hears us.

When you don’t have the words to pray, the Spirit within you steps in, helping you relate to and cry out to God with groans too deep for words (Romans 8:15, 26-27).

Signs of the Spirit’s Work

How do we know the Spirit is actively transforming our hearts? Paul and the rest of the New Testament point to two undeniable signs of the Holy Spirit’s work within us:

  1. The Natural Cry: A willing, unforced posture that looks to God and says, “Father.”
  2. The Natural Obedience: A willing heart that submits to Jesus as “Lord” (1 Corinthians 12:3).

While every true believer receives the Holy Spirit at salvation, this passage also reminds us of our need for the continual filling of the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18). Because we are already His children through faith, God poured His Spirit into our hearts. Let’s live today out of that fullness, walking in the security of His love.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the beautiful gift of adoption. Thank You that I am no longer a slave to fear, sin, or the law, but I am Your child. I praise You for sending the Spirit of Your Son into my heart.

Holy Spirit, stir up that deep, filial love within me today. Break down any walls of distance or doubt. Teach me to rely on You, to obey Jesus willingly as Lord, and to cry out “Abba, Father” with absolute confidence and warmth. Fill me afresh today, and let me walk securely in my identity as Your beloved child. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

TRUSTEES UNTIL THE TIME SET BY HIS FATHER / GALATIANS 4:2

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Galatians 4:2

But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father.

Trustees Until the Time Set by His Father: Nurturing Faith in a World of Influences

In Galatians 4:2, the Apostle Paul shares a powerful illustration that speaks directly to the structure of authority, growth, and divine timing: “The heir is subject to guardians and trustees until the time set by his father.”

Historically, Paul used this analogy to describe the spiritual state of believers under the Old Testament covenant. Before Christ came and offered His life as the perfect sacrifice for sin, the people of God were under the strict supervision of Mosaic laws and institutional sacrifices. Like underage children, they were true heirs to God’s promises, yet they required legal guardians to oversee their spiritual development until the Father’s perfectly appointed time arrived.

While this passage beautifully establishes our transition into full spiritual maturity and freedom through Jesus, it also reveals a timeless, practical principle for the family. It reminds us that parents are divinely appointed as the ultimate “guardians and trustees” of their children’s hearts, minds, and souls.

The Divine Blueprint for Education and Stewardship

Scripture makes it clear that godly parents are called to oversee the complete instruction of their children. In Deuteronomy 6:7, God commands families to talk about His laws diligently—whether sitting at home, walking along the road, lying down, or getting up. This foundational responsibility begins in the home but extends to wherever our children are being shaped.

Historically, this guardianship took the form of deeply personal education within the household or carefully placing children under the tutelage of godly mentors, teachers, and leaders. The lesson for us today remains unchanged: parents must do everything within their power to ensure their children receive a God-centered, Christ-honoring education that permeates every aspect of life.

Guarding Hearts Against Ungodly Philosophies

Being a faithful trustee also means acting as a shield. We live in a world filled with ungodly influences, subtle secular philosophies, and unbiblical principles that actively seek to capture the minds of the next generation.

Our role as guardians is twofold:

  1. To Protect: We must actively guard our children from environments and ideas that seek to erode their faith.
  2. To Equip: We must teach them how to critically evaluate, recognize, and resist worldly philosophies.

Rather than letting them be swept away by the shifting cultural tides, we are called to anchor them firmly in truth. As prophesied in Luke 1:17, our ultimate goal is to turn hearts toward wisdom and guide our children into a life of authentic faith, absolute trust, and dependence on God.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We thank You for the incredible privilege and weighty responsibility of being the guardians and trustees of the children You have placed in our care. Lord, give us the wisdom, courage, and discernment needed to raise them in a way that honors You. Help us to provide a Christ-centered foundation right in our homes, and shield them from the ungodly philosophies of this world.

Teach our children how to recognize truth and resist deception. May they grow to fully understand their inheritance in Christ, living not as slaves to the world, but as your beloved sons and daughters, firmly dependent on You. We commit our families into Your sovereign hands, trusting Your perfect timing and grace.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

WHAT DOES THIS CEREMONY MEAN TO YOU? / EXODUS 12:26-27

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Exodus 12:26-27

And it shall come to pass, when your children shall say unto you, What mean ye by this service? 27 That ye shall say, It is the sacrifice of the Lord’s passover, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he smote the Egyptians, and delivered our houses. And the people bowed the head and worshipped.

Passing the Torch: What the Story of Redemption Means for the Next Generation

Exodus 12:26-27 stands as one of the most powerful blueprints for family discipleship in all of Scripture. In this passage, Moses instructs the Israelites for the days ahead: “And when your children ask you, ‘What does this ceremony mean to you?’ then tell them, ‘It is the Passover sacrifice to the Lord, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt and spared our homes when he struck down the Egyptians.’”

God didn’t just want His people to be rescued; He wanted them to remember.

The Power of “What Does This Mean to You?”

Notice the specific question the children ask: “What does this ceremony mean to you?”

Children are naturally observant. They see the routines, the rituals, and the traditions we keep. But they don’t just want to know the historical facts of a religious holiday—they want to know your personal connection to it. They are looking to see if the faith we profess impacts our daily hearts and lives.

For the Israelite parents, the Passover was a tangible teaching tool. It was an opportunity to look their children in the eye and share the beautiful truth of how God redeemed them from slavery, rescued them with a mighty hand, and claimed them as His special possession.

From the Passover to the Lord’s Supper

As New Testament believers, we look at the Passover through the lens of the Cross. In fact, Jesus instituted the Lord’s Supper during a Passover meal, forever linking the two.

Just as the Passover lambs shielded Israel from death, Jesus Christ is our ultimate Passover Lamb (1 Corinthians 11:24-25). When we partake in Communion, we are participating in our own “Passover” remembrance.

  • The Broken Bread reminds us of His body, broken to pay the price for our freedom.
  • The Cup reminds us of His blood, poured out to establish a new covenant.

Through Christ, we have been bought back and rescued from an ultimate spiritual captivity—the slavery of sin and death.

Sharing Our Living Testimony

Our children, our friends, and our neighbors are still asking the same underlying question today when they look at our lives: What does Jesus mean to you?

We cannot afford to let our faith become a series of empty, mechanical habits. Every time we pray before a meal, gather for worship, or take communion, it is a living testimony. It is a golden opportunity to pass the torch of faith down to the next generation, ensuring they know that God is still in the business of rescuing, redeeming, and restoring hearts today.

🧎 A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for being a God who rescues and redeems. Thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus Christ, to be our ultimate Passover Lamb, breaking the chains of our sin and bringing us into true freedom. Lord, give us the wisdom and the courage to share our stories of Your faithfulness with the next generation. May our lives be a vibrant testimony so that when others see us, they see Your saving grace. Keep our hearts forever grateful for the price You paid to make us Your own.

In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.

NO YEAST IS TO BE FOUND IN YOUR HOUSES / EXODUS 12:19

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Exodus 12:19

Seven days shall there be no leaven found in your houses: for whosoever eateth that which is leavened, even that soul shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he be a stranger, or born in the land.

Sweeping Out the Old: What Exodus 12:19 Teaches Us About Spiritual Purging

In Exodus 12:19, God delivers a striking, non-negotiable command to the Israelites on the brink of their deliverance from Egypt: “For seven days no yeast is to be found in your houses.”

To the modern reader, a ban on baking ingredients might seem like a strange ritual. But in the ancient world—and throughout Scripture—yeast (or leaven) was a powerful symbol. Because a tiny pinch of fermented dough spreads silently through a whole lump of flour, yeast represents influence, growth, and most frequently, sin and compromise.

When God told His people to rid their homes of every single grain of yeast, He wasn’t just giving them a dietary restriction. He was teaching them a profound lesson about holiness, urgency, and true freedom.

1. Radical Removal Requires Intention

God didn’t say, “Just try not to bake with yeast.” He said it shouldn’t even be found in your houses. This required a radical, top-to-bottom search. The Israelites had to sweep out every corner, cupboard, and shelf.

Spiritual purging works the same way. True repentance isn’t just about managing our sins or keeping them hidden; it’s about pulling them out by the roots. It asks us to look closely at our habits, our environments, and our hearts, and aggressively remove the things that draw us away from God.

2. A Tiny Compromise Spoils the Whole Batch

The danger of yeast is its deceptive nature. It operates quietly in the dark, altering everything it touches. Paul echoed this truth in the New Testament when he warned, “A little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough” (1 Corinthians 5:6).

When we tolerate “small” sins—a little bit of bitterness, a tiny compromise in our integrity, a small habit of gossip—we forget how quickly those things expand. Left unchecked, they eventually take over our character, our relationships, and our spiritual vitality.

3. A Clean Break for a New Journey

The removal of yeast was also a matter of urgency. The Israelites needed to be ready to move the moment God gave the word. They didn’t have time to wait for dough to rise. Leaving the yeast behind meant leaving Egypt behind completely.

To walk into the new future God has for us, we have to stop dragging the ingredients of our past along with us. We cannot experience the fullness of God’s freedom while clinging to the very things that kept us captive.

Sweeping the Heart

As we reflect on Exodus 12:19, let’s look inward. What is the “yeast” in your life right now? Is it an ungodly habit, an unforgiving spirit, or a secret compromise?

God’s call to holiness is not a burden; it is an invitation to walk light, unhindered, and fully alive in His freedom. Let’s do the heart-work of sweeping out the old so we can fully embrace the new life He has prepared for us.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for being a God who delivers us from bondage and calls us into absolute freedom. Holy Spirit, we ask that You search our hearts today. Shine Your light into the hidden corners of our lives and reveal any “yeast” that has quietly settled in—any sin, compromise, bitterness, or pride that is corrupting our walk with You.

Give us the courage and the strength to sweep it out cleanly. Teach us to hate what is evil and cling tightly to what is good. May our hearts and our homes be holy places where Your presence loves to dwell. We leave our past behind and step fully into the fresh, unleavened joy of Your grace.

In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.

MUST BE CUT OFF FROM ISRAEL / EXODUS 12:15

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Exodus 12:17

And ye shall observe the feast of unleavened bread; for in this selfsame day have I brought your armies out of the land of Egypt: therefore shall ye observe this day in your generations by an ordinance for ever.

The Rhythm of Remembrance: Guarding the Feast of Unleavened Bread

In Exodus 12:17, God commands His people: “Celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread, because it was on this very day that I brought your divisions out of Egypt. Celebrate this day as a lasting ordinance for the generations to come.”

This wasn’t just a instruction about a change in diet; it was a blueprint for a transformed life.

The Symbolism of the Bread

In the ancient world, as well as today, yeast causes dough to swell and rise through fermentation. Scripture frequently uses yeast as a symbol for sin and worldly corruption because of how a tiny amount can quietly spread through an entire batch.

By commanding Israel to eat unleavened bread, God was calling them to a state of true repentance. Removing the yeast from their homes was a tangible, physical demonstration of a spiritual reality: turning away from the impurities of Egypt to embrace a pure, dedicated walk with God.

A New Testament Reflection

This ancient festival carries profound weight for modern believers. In 1 Corinthians 5:6-8, the Apostle Paul explicitly connects the Feast of Unleavened Bread to the Christian life, urging us to rid ourselves of the “old yeast” of malice and wickedness so that we can live in sincerity and truth.

Our Passover Lamb, Jesus Christ, has already been sacrificed. Because of His salvation, we are called to daily examine our hearts, clear out the subtle areas of sin, and keep our lives reserved for His holy purposes. To refuse this turning from sin is to risk drifting from the very covenant relationship He died to give us.

Let us celebrate our deliverance not just with words, but with a life marked by gratitude, obedience, and pure devotion.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for being the God who delivers us out of bondage and sets our feet on solid ground. We thank You for the ultimate sacrifice of Your Son, Jesus, our true Passover Lamb, who bought our freedom with His own blood.

Lord, we ask that You search our hearts today. Reveal any “yeast” of sin, malice, or compromise that we have allowed to quietly grow within our lives and homes. Grant us the grace and the strength for true repentance, that we may eagerly cast out what is displeasing to You.

Help us to live daily in sincerity and truth, fully separated for Your holy purposes. May our lives be a continuous feast of gratitude and obedience to You.

In Jesus’ mighty name we pray, Amen.

MUST BE CUT OFF FROM ISRAEL / EXODUS 12:15

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Exodus 12:15

Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread; even the first day ye shall put away leaven out of your houses: for whosoever eateth leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel.

The Gravity of Disobedience: What It Means to Be “Cut Off”

When we look back at the instructions given to Israel on the very eve of their rescue from Egypt, God laid down specific parameters for the Passover Feast. In Exodus 12:15, He commands: “Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread. On the first day you shall remove leaven from your houses. For whoever eats what is leavened from the first day until the seventh day, that person must be cut off from Israel.”

To modern ears, being “cut off” might sound like a simple social snub or a temporary suspension from community activities. However, in the context of ancient Israel, deliberately rejecting God’s instruction resulted in severe judgment.

Understanding the Old Covenant Severity

Under the Old Covenant, to be “cut off” (karet in Hebrew) meant a complete separation from the community and the covenant promises of God. The guilty person was expelled or removed from the assembly. In some instances, this spiritual banishment was accompanied by physical death carried out by the community, as seen later in rules regarding the Sabbath: “You shall keep the Sabbath, therefore, for it is holy to you. Everyone who profanes it must be put to death; for whoever does any work on it, that person must be cut off from among his people” (Exodus 31:14).

Whether the judgment was executed immediately by human hands or left to the divine hand of God, the spiritual reality was identical: rebellion meant losing your place in God’s family. Eating leavened bread during the festival wasn’t just a dietary mistake—it was a public statement of defiance against the God who had just delivered them from slavery.

The New Covenant Shift

Does this Old Testament severity still matter to us today? Absolutely. Under the New Covenant, the physical rituals have changed, but the spiritual principles remain true.

Through Christ, our ultimate Passover Lamb, we are no longer bound by regulations regarding physical yeast or bread. However, the warning against willful rebellion remains urgent:

  • Self-Exclusion: Those who deliberately reject Christ and choose to remain in sin essentially exclude themselves from God’s grace and salvation.
  • The New Covenant Warning: Hell itself is described in the Scriptures as the ultimate fulfillment of being “cut off”—a place of permanent, tragic separation from the love, light, and presence of God.
  • Grace vs. Presumption: Living under grace does not mean instructions can be safely ignored. Instead, the mercy we receive should compel us to live lives of deep devotion and holy reverence.

To walk away from God’s explicit truth is to step out from under His umbrella of protection. Let us check our hearts, rid ourselves of the “leaven” of sin and pride, and walk faithfully within the beautiful boundary lines of His grace.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, Your Word reminds us today that You are both a merciful Savior and a holy God. Forgive us for the times we have treated Your instructions lightly or allowed the leaven of compromise to creep into our lives. We thank You for the New Covenant sealed in the blood of Jesus Christ, which protects us from the judgment we deserve. Give us a heart of willing obedience, Lord. Help us to remain firmly rooted in Your truth, abiding in Your love, so that we may never wander away from Your presence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A LASTING ORDINANCE / EXODUS 12:14

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Exodus 12:14

And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the Lord throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.

A Lasting Ordinance: From the Shadow of Passover to the Substance of Communion

“This is a day you are to commemorate; for the generations to come you shall celebrate it as a festival to the Lord—a lasting ordinance.” — Exodus 12:14

In the quiet of an ancient Egyptian night, a nation stood on the precipice of freedom. The instructions given to Israel through Moses were meticulous, urgent, and deeply symbolic. They were to roast the lamb, eat the unleavened bread in haste, and paint the doorposts with blood.

When the destroyer passed through the land, he would see the blood and pass over those homes. It was a night of dynamic deliverance—but God explicitly commanded that it should not be a one-time memory. It was to be a lasting ordinance.

Looking Back to the Deliverance

For the Israelite community, the annual Passover feast was an anchor. Year after year, generation after generation, the community gathered to taste the bitter herbs of their past slavery and celebrate the sweetness of their rescue.

It forced them to remember who they were: a people brought out of darkness by the mighty hand of God. The physical act of eating the meal kept the spiritual reality of their salvation alive.

Looking Forward to the Ultimate Lamb

As New Testament Christians, we read Exodus 12 not merely as ancient history, but as a prophetic blueprint. The shadow of the Old Testament Passover finds its full, radiant substance in the New Testament reality of Jesus Christ. As the Apostle Paul reminds us, “Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed” (1 Corinthians 5:7).

When Jesus sat with His disciples in the Upper Room to celebrate the traditional Passover meal, He did something revolutionary. He broke the bread and took the cup, transforming the ancient imagery into a new, ongoing covenant:

Our Regular Rhythm of Remembrance

Just as ancient Israel was commanded to keep the Passover as a permanent institution, the Church is called to participate regularly in the Lord’s Supper. Communion is our lasting ordinance.

When we take the bread and the cup, we aren’t just going through a ritual routine. We are stepping into a profound spiritual rhythm. We look back to the cross where our ultimate price was paid. We look inward to examine our hearts and walk in unity with our brothers and sisters. And we look forward, anticipating the great wedding supper of the Lamb.

The blood on the wooden doorposts of Egypt saved a temporary nation from a physical plague. The blood on the wooden cross of Calvary saves a global family from eternal separation. Let us never grow cold to the magnitude of this gift. Let us celebrate the table regularly, reverently, and with immense joy.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, Almighty Deliverer,

We stand in awe of Your perfect plan of redemption. Just as You heard the cries of Your people in Egypt and provided a way of escape through the blood of the lamb, You have heard our cries and provided the ultimate rescue through Your Son, Jesus Christ.

Forgive us for the times we take Your grace for granted or approach Your table with a distracted heart. Lord, let the rhythm of Communion always break our apathy. As we partake in this lasting ordinance, refresh our spirits, deepen our gratitude, and unite us as Your body.

May our lives reflect the freedom You have purchased for us. We look forward with joy to the day we feast in Your physical presence.

In the holy and precious name of Jesus, our Passover Lamb, Amen.

YOUR CLOAK TUCKED INTO YOUR BELT YOUR SANDALS ON YOUR FEET / EXODUS 12:11

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Exodus 12:11

And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the Lord’s passover.

Ready for Deliverance: Living with Spiritual Urgency

Have you ever been in a season where you knew a massive change was coming, but you didn’t know exactly when the doors would fly open?

In Exodus 12:11, God gives the Israelites instructions for eating the very first Passover meal in Egypt. He didn’t tell them to sit back, relax, and linger over dinner. Instead, He commanded:

“This is how you are to eat it: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. Eat it in haste; it is the Lord’s Passover.”

This wasn’t just a casual family dinner; it was a meal eaten on the brink of freedom. God told His people to be prepared for immediate departure. This vivid picture of physical readiness emphasized a powerful spiritual truth: God’s followers must obey Him without hesitation.

Tucked-In Cloaks and Strapped-On Sandals

To understand the weight of this instruction, we have to look at how people dressed in the ancient Near East. Long, flowing cloaks were fine for resting or casual walking, but they were a major trip hazard if you needed to run, fight, or work. To “tuck your cloak into your belt” (historically referred to as “girding your loins”) meant pulling up the hem of your robe and securing it at the waist so your legs could move freely.

By telling them to keep their sandals on their feet and their walking staffs in their hands, God was eliminating every possible delay. They weren’t supposed to wait for deliverance to happen and then look for their shoes. They had to eat the meal believing that the exit cue was coming at any second.

The Danger of Spiritual Procrastination

How often do we miss God’s timing because we are spiritually un-girded? We live with our cloaks dragging, tangled up in distractions, comfort, or the comforting routine of our current “Egypt.” When God says “Move,” we reply, “Hold on, let me find my sandals.”

True faith requires a posture of active readiness. Centuries later, Jesus echoed this exact same imagery when teaching His disciples about spiritual alertness in Luke 12:35:

“Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning…”

We are called to live awake, urgent, and expectant. When we pray for breakthrough, or when we ask God to use us, we must format our lives to handle the answer. If you are waiting on God to move a mountain or open a door, don’t wait passively. Wait with your shoes on. Be ready to leave the past behind the moment He calls your name.

A Closing Prayer for Readiness

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for being a God who delivers, heals, and redeems. Forgive us for the times we have grown comfortable in places You have called us to leave, or sluggish in our obedience.

Today, we choose to tuck our cloaks into our belts. We lay aside the weights, distractions, and doubts that cause us to stumble. Strap Your truth onto our feet like sandals, preparing us to move swiftly wherever You lead. Give us a heart of immediate obedience—free from hesitation, procrastination, or fear.

Keep us alert, awake, and expectant. We want to be ready for the breakthroughs You have prepared for us. We trust Your timing, and we stand ready to move at Your word.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

BITTER HERBS AND BREAD MADE WITHOUT YEAST / EXODUS 12:8

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Exodus 12:8

And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.

Leaving Egypt Behind: What the Bitter Herbs and Unleavened Bread Teach Us Today

When we think of the Passover, our minds often go straight to the sacrificial lamb. But God’s instructions for that monumental night in Egypt included two other specific elements on the menu: bitter herbs and bread made without yeast (Exodus 12:8).

These weren’t just random side dishes. They were profound visual and physical reminders of where the Israelites had been, and the radical transition God was calling them into. As we look at these two elements, we find a timeless blueprint for our own spiritual journeys.

1. The Bitter Herbs: Remembering the Cost of Captivity

The instructions in Exodus required the family to eat the lamb alongside bitter herbs. This bitter taste served a specific purpose: it was a visceral reminder of their bitter years as slaves in Egypt.

Before God delivered them, Israel groaned under severe oppression, brick by grueling brick. The herbs ensured they would never forget the misery of their bondage.

In a spiritual sense, we all have our own “Egypt.” Before Christ, we were slaves to sin, operating under a heavy spiritual debt. Remembering the bitterness of our past life isn’t about walking in guilt or shame; rather, it reminds us of the true cost of captivity. It keeps us humble, fuels our gratitude, and ensures we never look back at our old life with romanticized longing. As Romans 6:21 asks, “What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death!”

2. The Unleavened Bread: A Clean Break from Sin

The second requirement was bread made completely without yeast (unleavened bread). Throughout Scripture, yeast—or leaven—is frequently used as a symbol for sin, pride, and spiritual corruption. Just a tiny amount of yeast works its way through an entire lump of dough, altering it completely.

By commanding Israel to purge all leaven from their homes (Exodus 12:15), God was demanding a total separation from the worldliness and corruption of Egypt.

But there was also a practical reality: they had to leave in a hurry. Unleavened bread doesn’t require time to rise. It is the bread of haste. When God says it is time to move, we cannot linger, making provisions for our old habits. Walking in a personal relationship with God requires us to completely separate ourselves from the sinful patterns of the world and dedicate our hearts to Him alone. We cannot walk into our promised future while still carrying the leaven of our past.

The Call to Complete Devotion

The Passover menu tells a story of a definitive transition. The bitter herbs tell us what we were saved from, and the unleavened bread tells us how we are to walk out our freedom—with sincerity, purity, and haste.

Today, let us look examine our hearts. Are there areas where we are letting a little bit of “leaven” compromise our walk? Are we flirting with the worldliness of Egypt, forgetting how bitter the slavery actually was? Choose today to live a life fully set apart, consecrated, and dedicated to the One who broke your chains.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for being our Great Deliverer. Thank You for hearing our cries and rescuing us from the bitter slavery of sin and death. Lord, we never want to take our freedom for granted. Keep our hearts forever grateful for the heavy price Jesus paid as our ultimate Passover Lamb.

We ask that You search our hearts today. Holy Spirit, reveal any hidden “leaven” of sin, compromise, or pride that we have allowed to remain in our lives. Give us the strength and the urgency to purge it completely. Help us to live holy, set-apart lives that reflect Your purity. Give us the courage to make a clean break from the world’s patterns so we can run swiftly after You. Dedicate our eyes, our minds, and our hands to Your service alone.

In Jesus’ mighty name we pray, Amen.

THEY ARE TO TAKE SOME OF THE BLOOD / EXODUS 12:7

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Exodus 12:7

And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it.

The Mark of Mercy: Experiencing the Power of the Blood

In the book of Exodus, God’s people found themselves on the brink of an epic rescue, but it required an act of precise obedience. In Exodus 12:7, the Lord commanded the Israelites regarding the Passover sacrifice: “Then they are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the lambs.”

It wasn’t enough for the lamb to be chosen or even for its blood to be shed. To be protected from the coming judgment, the families had to actively take the blood and apply it directly to the entryways of their homes.

The Ultimate Fulfillment

This Old Testament shadow breaks out into a brilliant reality in the New Testament. The Passover lamb and its protective blood directly point to Jesus Christ—the true and ultimate sacrifice. He is the “Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29).

Centuries before the cross, prophets and apostles tracked this beautiful thread of redemption:

  • The Silent Sacrifice: Isaiah foresaw Him as a lamb led to the slaughter (Isaiah 53:7), a truth Philip later used to preach the Gospel to the Ethiopian eunuch (Acts 8:32-35).
  • Our True Passover: Paul explicitly tells us that “Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed” (1 Corinthians 5:7).
  • The Eternal Plan: This was never an afterthought. Revelation describes Jesus as the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world (Revelation 13:8).

Applied by Faith

Just as the Israelites had to take the hyssop and apply the blood to their doorposts, we must apply Christ’s sacrifice to our lives. Jesus died for all, but His saving power is realized when we personally accept it by faith. When His blood covers the “doorposts of our hearts,” judgment passes over us, and we are completely set free from the bondage of sin.

Are you living under that cover today? Rest in the finished, protective work of the Lamb.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your flawless plan of redemption. Thank You for sending Jesus Christ to be the ultimate Passover Lamb who took away my sin and judgment. I thank You that by faith, His precious blood covers my life, granting me safety, forgiveness, and eternal freedom. Help me to walk daily in the confidence of this new covenant, secure in Your love. In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.
