Which in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me:
From Useless to Useful: The Transforming Power of Grace
We all love a good redemption story. There is something deeply moving about seeing a life completely turned around, moving from a place of brokenness to a life of profound purpose.
In the tiny but powerful New Testament book of Philemon, we find one of the most beautiful pictures of redemption ever written. It centers around a clever wordplay in Philemon 1:11:
“Formerly he was useless to you, but now he has become useful both to you and to me.”
The Wordplay of Grace
To understand the depth of this verse, we have to look at the name of the man Paul is writing about: Onesimus. In the ancient world, the name Onesimus literally meant “useful.”
But there was a glaring, painful irony in his story. Onesimus was a runaway slave. In the eyes of his master, Philemon, and according to the laws of the Roman Empire, he had become the exact opposite of his name. He was legally, financially, and practically useless. He was a liability, a fugitive, and a source of broken trust.
When Onesimus fled to Rome, he crossed paths with the Apostle Paul, who was in chains for the gospel. In that dark prison, a miracle happened: Onesimus met Jesus.
A New Identity, A New Value
The gospel changes everything. It changes our standing before God, and it completely alters our relationships with others.
Once Onesimus surrendered his life to Christ, his true identity was unlocked. He was no longer just a runaway slave; he was a child of God. He began serving Paul in prison, providing companionship, encouragement, and vital assistance. The man whose name meant “useful” was finally living up to his name.
Paul recognizes this radical shift and sends him back to Philemon with this short letter. Paul’s plea to Philemon is profound: Receive him back. Not just as a piece of property or a servant, but as a Christian brother.
What This Means for Us Today
The story of Onesimus is our story.
Before we met Christ, our lives were falling short of the purpose for which we were created. Our striving, our mistakes, and our independence left us spiritually “useless” to the Kingdom of God. We were running away from the Master.
But grace steps in and rewrites our narrative.
- Grace restores our true identity. We are no longer defined by our past failures or our old labels.
- Grace unlocks our true potential. In Christ, our lives, our gifts, and our service become a great blessing to the church and the world around us.
- Grace demands a new perspective. Just as Philemon had to look past the old “useless” slave to see his new “useful” brother, we are called to view others through the lens of redemption and forgiveness.
Are you running away from God today? Do you feel like your life has been of no benefit to anyone? Remember Onesimus. In the hands of the Savior, what was once lost and useless can become beautifully, powerfully useful.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the radical, transforming power of Your grace. Thank You that You do not leave us in our brokenness or define us by our past runaways and failures. Forgive us for the times we have been useless to Your Kingdom, living only for ourselves.
We ask that You continue to work in our hearts today. Unlocked our true purpose, and help us to be useful, encouraging, and faithful servants of Jesus Christ. Give us the grace to see others through Your eyes—extending forgiveness and welcoming them as true brothers and sisters in faith. May our lives bring blessing to Your church and glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
