AS A DEAR BROTHER / PHILEMON 1:15-16

(KJV) Philemon 1:15-16

For perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever; 16 Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord?

As a Dear Brother: How the Gospel Shatters Our Divisive Walls

“For perhaps he departed for a while for this purpose, that you might receive him forever, no longer as a slave but more than a slave—a beloved brother, especially to me but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord.” — Philemon 1:15-16

We live in a world obsessed with classification. Society loves to draw lines, erect walls, and assign worth based on status, economy, and background. But when the Gospel enters a heart, it doesn’t just patch up the old system—it completely demolishes it.

Nowhere is this radical transformation more beautifully captured than in Paul’s brief letter to Philemon.

From Property to Partner

Onesimus was a runaway slave. In the Roman Empire, he was viewed legally as mere property, stripped of autonomy and rights. Philemon was his master, holding all the societal power. By all worldly standards, their relationship was defined by ownership, debt, and submission.

But then, the unexpected happened. Onesimus ran straight into the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Paul writes to Philemon not with demands of legalistic leverage, but with the revolutionary language of grace. He suggests a divine perspective on the messy situation: perhaps Onesimus’s departure was allowed for a brief moment so that he could be received back eternally. But he was not returning to his old status.

The Truth of Christian Brotherhood

Slavery cannot exist among God’s people who have seen the truth of Christian brotherhood and experienced the personal spiritual freedom that comes from knowing Jesus. When we are washed by the same blood, we are brought to the exact same level at the foot of the cross.

Paul explicitly tells Philemon that Onesimus must no longer be treated as a slave. Instead, he is to be welcomed as a fellow believer and a dear brother. In the eyes of God, this runaway servant was now fully equal with Paul, the great apostle, and Philemon, the wealthy church host.

As Paul would later remind the church in Colossae—the very city where Philemon and Onesimus lived—bondservants and masters ultimately answer to the same heavenly Master, where there is no partiality (Colossians 3:22–25).

Living the Freedom

Spiritual freedom in Christ always demands external fruit. We cannot claim to be liberated by grace while holding others in chains of judgment, superiority, or social indifference.

When we look at our neighbors, our coworkers, or those society deems “less than,” do we see labels, or do we see brothers and sisters? The Gospel calls us to look past worldly status and see the divine imprint of the Creator. Let us abandon our human categories and fiercely protect the absolute equality we share in the family of God.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the radical, barrier-breaking power of the Gospel. Thank You that at the foot of the cross, all worldly status is stripped away, and we are made equal through the blood of Your Son, Jesus. Forgive us for the times we have allowed societal divisions, prejudice, or pride to infect how we view others.

Remind us daily of the spiritual freedom we have received, and help us to extend that same grace and dignity to everyone we meet. May our churches and communities be places where no one is treated as a servant to human pride, but where all are genuinely welcomed as dear brothers and sisters in Christ. We love You, and we ask these things in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.
