Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.

Suffering with Purpose: Praise God That You Bear That Name

“However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.” — 1 Peter 4:16 (NIV)

Words have immense power, but names carry identity. In the first century, the term “Christian” wasn’t originally a badge of honor worn proudly around someone’s neck. It was likely coined by outsiders in Antioch as a mocking insult—essentially meaning “little Christs” or part of “Christ’s partisan group.”

To be labeled a Christian in the Roman Empire came with a heavy price. It meant social isolation, economic hardship, and often, physical persecution. Yet, writing to believers scattered and suffering under the weight of this hostility, the Apostle Peter offers a radical perspective shift: Do not be ashamed. Instead, praise God that you bear that name.

Moving Beyond Shame

Shame is a powerful deterrent. It tempts us to hide our allegiance, quiet our convictions, and blend into the background when culture opposes our faith. When we face ridicule, exclusion, or misunderstanding for living out the Gospel today, our natural instinct might be to shrink back.

But Peter reminds us that suffering for the sake of Christ is not a sign of God’s rejection; it is a sign of alignment. When you face pushback for your integrity, your kindness, or your bold stance on truth, you are sharing in the fellowship of Christ’s sufferings. There is absolutely no shame in being identified with the King of Kings.

The Ultimate Honor

To bear the name of Christian means you belong to Him. You are:

  • Adopted into the family of God.
  • Marked by the Holy Spirit.
  • Entrusted with the message of reconciliation.

The world may try to use your faith as a weapon of criticism, but God views it as your highest honor. When we praise God in the midst of trial, we flip the script on adversity. We declare that the worth of knowing Jesus far outweighs any temporary comfort the world can offer.

If you are feeling the heat of the fire today because of your faith, hold your head high. You wear the name of the One who conquered death.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the profound honor of being called by Your name. Forgive me for the times I have allowed fear or the desire for human approval to make me shrink back in shame. Today, I choose to embrace the identity You have given me. If following You brings trial, criticism, or isolation, I pray for the grace to stand firm.

Fill me with the Holy Spirit so that my life clearly reflects the character of Jesus. May I never boast in my own strength, but only in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. I praise You today, Lord, simply and deeply, that I get to bear the name of Christian.

In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
