(KJV) 1 Peter 2:18
Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward.
Grace Under Pressure: Finding Christ’s Footsteps in Unjust Places
When we open the pages of the New Testament, we occasionally run headfirst into verses that make us pause, shift uncomfortably, and wrestle with the text. One of those passages is 1 Peter 2:18, which states: “You who are slaves must submit to your masters with all respect. Do what they tell you—not only if they are kind and reasonable, but even if they are cruel”.
At first glance, this text can feel deeply unsettling. To understand what Peter is communicating, we have to look past our modern understanding of history and dive into the cultural context of the first-century Roman Empire—and see how his words apply to modern struggles.
Understanding the Context
When we read the word “slave” today, we rightfully think of the horrific, race-based chattel slavery that defined early American history. However, first-century Greco-Roman slavery functioned differently. The Greek word used here is oiketai, which specifically refers to household or domestic servants.
In the Roman Empire, millions of people were household servants. They were teachers, doctors, managers, and laborers. Some entered servitude voluntarily to pay off debts, escape extreme poverty, or secure food and shelter. While some could eventually buy their freedom, they ultimately possessed few legal rights and were completely vulnerable to the temperament of their masters. They couldn’t simply quit, protest, or walk away.
Peter wasn’t endorsing the institution of slavery; instead, he was giving practical, gospel-centered survival instructions to people trapped in a system they had no immediate power to change.
The Modern Parallel: Working Under Unjust Authority
While most of us reading this today are not domestic slaves, almost all of us answer to some form of authority. We can find a direct modern parallel in our workplaces, organizations, or academic institutions.
We have all experienced—or known someone who has experienced—a “crooked” or unfair boss. It is easy to work hard and show respect when a manager is kind, reasonable, and supportive. But what happens when an authority figure is harsh, takes credit for your work, or treats you unfairly?
Peter challenges us to look beyond the human authority figure and look directly at God.
Working for a Higher Master
Peter’s core message in this passage is that our behavior should never be dictated by how other people treat us; it should be dictated by our relationship with God.
When we choose to show respect and do our best—even under a toxic boss or an unfair system—we are not validating their bad behavior. We are demonstrating that our peace, our worth, and our identity do not come from them. We choose integrity because we serve a higher Master.
As Peter writes a few verses later, we do this because we are following the ultimate example: Jesus Christ, who suffered unjustly at the hands of cruel men, yet never retaliated, choosing instead to trust the One who judges justly. When we respond to unfairness with grace, we point people toward the gospel.
Closing Prayer
Father God,
We acknowledge that living out Your grace in a broken, unfair world is incredibly difficult. When we face unjust treatment, unfair authorities, or situations where we feel powerless, keep our eyes fixed on You. Remove any bitterness or anger from our hearts, and fill us with the same mind that was in Christ Jesus—who endured suffering without losing His love or His integrity.
Give us the strength to work with excellence and treat others with respect, not because they have earned it, but because we belong to You. May our lives, our work ethic, and our patience under pressure be a testimony of Your transforming grace. Thank You for being a faithful Creator who sees us, loves us, and ultimately holds our lives in Your hands.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
