(KJV) Jude 1:1
Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called:
Finding Your Identity in the Shadows of Greatness
Imagine growing up in a household where your older brother is literally the Savior of the world.
That was the reality for Jude. Along with his brother James, Jude grew up in Nazareth sharing meals, chores, and childhood memories with Jesus. Yet, when Jude sits down to write his short but powerful letter, he doesn’t lead with his family credentials. He doesn’t open with, “Hey everyone, listen to me because I’m Jesus’ half-brother.”
Instead, Jude introduces himself with radical humility: “A servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James.”
By the time this letter was penned, James had become a pillar and leader of the early Church in Jerusalem. Jude gladly identifies himself in relation to his earthly brother, but when it comes to Jesus, the family dynamic had completely shifted. Jesus was no longer just his big brother; He was his Lord. Jude traded his earthly claim to fame for the privilege of being a spiritual servant.
The Threefold Cord of the Believer
After establishing his humility, Jude immediately pivots to anchor the identity of his readers. If you have ever felt insecure, forgotten, or shaken in your faith, Jude 1:1 offers a beautiful, three-part anchor for your soul. He addresses his letter to those who are:
- Called: You are not an accident. God specifically chose you, reached into your life, and invited you into His kingdom. Your faith begins with His divine initiative.
- Loved: Jude notes that we are “loved in God the Father” (some translations say sanctified). You do not have to perform to earn God’s affection. You are already enveloped in the deep, unchanging love of the Creator.
- Kept: This might be the most comforting word in the entire verse. In a world full of spiritual distractions and trials, you are not holding onto God by your own weak grip. He is keeping you. You are preserved, guarded, and secured for Jesus Christ.
Before Jude goes on to warn his readers about false teachers and difficult times ahead, he reminds them whose they are. You are called, you are loved, and you are kept.
A Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the powerful reminder of who we are in Your eyes. Like Jude, clear away our pride and help us find our highest honor in simply being servants of Your Son, Jesus Christ. When the world feels unstable and our faith feels small, anchor our hearts in Your truth. Thank You for calling us out of darkness, surrounding us with Your perfect love, and promising to keep us secure until the very end.
In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.
