I Will Extol the Lord: Finding Refuge in Our Deepest Troubles

We all face moments that leave us feeling entirely overwhelmed. Whether it is an unexpected crisis, a season of deep anxiety, or a trial that seems to have no end, fear can easily paralyze us.

But what do we do when our backs are against the wall?

In Psalm 34:1-22, the writer—traditionally understood to be David while fleeing for his life—pours out a song filled with raw enthusiasm and infectious excitement. He has just experienced a miraculous rescue from deep troubles, and his immediate reaction isn’t just relief—it is radical praise.

His testimony serves as a powerful reminder: the God who heard his cry is the exact same God who listens to yours today.

The Power of an “At All Times” Praise

The psalm opens with a staggering declaration:

“I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.” — Psalms 34:1

It is easy to praise God when life is smooth, but David resolves to extol Him “at all times”. This tells us that praise is not a reflection of our perfect circumstances; it is a reflection of God’s unchanging character.

When we choose to magnify the Lord, we aren’t downplaying our problems. We are simply choosing to make God bigger than our fears. David writes that when the humble hear of God’s deliverance, they will be glad. Your victory is never just for you—it is an invitation for others to trust that they will also experience His goodness and care through their own difficult times.

He Hears the Poor Man’s Cry

There is profound comfort in the intimacy of verse 6:

“This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him and saved him out of all his troubles.”

God does not distance Himself from our pain. He doesn’t look at our brokenness and tell us to pull ourselves together. Instead, Scripture promises that the Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit (Psalms 34:18).

When we take refuge in Him, we are met with a guarantee of ultimate security. While walking the righteous path does not exempt us from afflictions—in fact, Psalms 34:19 explicitly says the righteous will have many troubles—the ultimate promise remains unshaken: the Lord delivers us out of them all.

Taste and See

If you are walking through an extremely difficult season, look to the Lord and let your face be radiant (Psalms 34:5). Step out in faith, taste and see that the Lord is good, and anchor your soul in the only refuge that can never be shaken.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

I extol You today because Your name is worthy of all praise. Even when my circumstances are confusing and my heart is heavy, I choose to declare that You are good. Thank You for being a God who hears, answers, and delivers us from our deepest fears.

Lord, I lift up anyone reading this who feels brokenhearted or crushed in spirit. Draw near to them right now. Encapsulate them in Your peace, and let them feel the safety of taking refuge under Your wings. Remind them that though their troubles may be many, You are the Deliverer who redeems the lives of Your servants.

Give us the strength to keep Your praise continually on our lips, trusting that we will see Your goodness in the land of the living.
