When God Seems Silent: Finding Strength in Psalms 28

Have you ever felt like your prayers were bouncing off the ceiling? You pour out your heart, but all you receive in return is a heavy, echoing quiet.

If you are experiencing that tension right now, you are not alone. In Psalms 28:1-9, King David stands exactly where you are standing. He opens his prayer with a raw, desperate plea: “To you, Lord, I call; you are my Rock, do not turn a deaf ear to me. For if you remain silent, I will be like those who go down to the pit.”

When God seems silent, the weight of the world can feel crushing. Yet, this psalm shows us that divine silence is never divine absence.

The Cry of Desperation

At the beginning of this psalm, David wonders if God is listening to his prayers. He calls God his “Rock”—a title representing stability, safety, and a firm foundation—yet he feels completely disconnected. He fears that if God remains silent, he will slide into despair, slipping away like those who have no hope.

We often face the same spiritual battle. When circumstances get difficult and answers are delayed, it is easy to assume God has turned away. But like the psalmist, every believer today must keep reaching out for that deeper relationship with God.

The Bridge of Grace

We have an incredible privilege that David did not yet fully see. While David lifted his hands toward the earthly, hidden sanctuary, we look to Jesus Christ.

Through Jesus, we have direct access to God the Father. As the author of Hebrews reminds us, we can approach God’s throne of grace with bold confidence to find help in our time of need (Hebrews 4:16). Jesus endured the ultimate silence of the cross so that you and I would never have to be abandoned to the pit.

From Silence to Shepherding Care

Notice how Psalms 28 shifts. Without warning, David’s desperation turns into a burst of praise: “Praise be to the Lord, for he has heard my cry for mercy. The Lord is my strength and my shield…”

What changed? His circumstances hadn’t altered yet, but his perspective did. He remembered who his God was. He realized that the Lord is not a distant spectator, but a loving guardian.

The Lord has promised to respond to his children with comfort, help, and guidance, just as a shepherd cares for his sheep. He is the Great Shepherd who doesn’t just watch us from afar—He carries us through the wilderness.

If you are waiting on an answer today, keep knocking. Keep praying. Trust that your Shepherd is holding you tight, even in the quietest seasons.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, my Rock, there are days when the silence feels overwhelming and I wonder if my cries are reaching You. Forgive me for the times my faith wavers when I cannot see You moving. Thank You for the access I have to Your presence through Jesus Christ, my Savior.

When the world feels unstable, remind me that You are my shield and my strength. Teach me to trust Your heart when I cannot hear Your voice. Father, be my Shepherd today. Guide my steps, comfort my anxious thoughts, and carry me through this season. I rest in the assurance that You hear me and will never let me go. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
