I beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds:

Finding Rest in a Restless World: Learning to Sit at the Feet of Jesus

In a culture that measures our worth by our productivity, busyness has become a badge of honor. We fill our calendars, stack our to-do lists, and run on the fumes of late-night coffees and early-morning alarms. Our minds are constantly racing, flooded by notifications, headlines, and the endless internal chatter of what we should be doing next.

But if we look at the life of Jesus, we see a completely different rhythm. Jesus was never in a rush. He was deeply impactful, fully present, and incredibly purposeful, yet He frequently withdrew to quiet places to rest and pray. He knew that to pour out, we must first be filled by the Father.

The Danger of the Hurried Soul

When we live in a constant state of hurry, our souls begin to erode. We become quick to anger, slow to love, and mostly blind to the small, beautiful moments God places right in front of us. Hurry is the enemy of spiritual intimacy. We cannot hear the “still, small voice” of God when our lives are blasting static at maximum volume.

In Luke 10, we see the classic story of Martha and Mary. Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She was anxious, troubled, and resentful of her sister, Mary, who simply sat at the feet of Jesus, listening to what He said.

Jesus gently corrected her, saying, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”

Choosing the Good Portion

Choosing the “good portion” doesn’t mean we neglect our responsibilities. It means we change our internal posture. It means establishing a sanctuary in our hearts where Jesus sits on the throne, undisturbed by the chaos around us.

Rest is not a reward for finished work; it is a prerequisite for faithful living. God modeled it on the seventh day of creation, not because He was tired, but to show us that our identity is rooted in who He is, not what we perform.

If you are feeling weary, heavy-laden, or spiritually dry today, consider this your invitation to slow down. Unplug for an hour. Step outside. Open your hands and simply breathe in God’s grace. The work will wait, but your soul cannot.

A Closing Prayer for Peace and Rest

Heavenly Father,

Thank You that You do not measure my worth by the length of my to-do list or the speed of my steps. Forgive me for the times I have let hurry steal my joy and crowd out Your presence. Right now, I choose to step off the treadmill of performance and rest in Your unconditional love.

Calm my anxious thoughts and quiet the noise around me. Guide my steps through the challenges of this week, protect my mind from distraction, and inspire me with Your Holy Spirit. Help me to acknowledge Your presence in every small detail and every human goodness I see. May Your Word take deep root in my heart, transforming the way I live and love.

Grant me the grace to sit at Your feet, to listen to Your voice, and to lean entirely on Your everlasting arms. When I lie down tonight, bring me home rejoicing to a place of true, restorative rest.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
