RIGHTEOUSNESS THAT COMES FROM GOD / PHILIPPIANS 3:9

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Philippians 3:9

And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

Found in Faith: Embracing the Righteousness That Comes From God

When you hear the word righteousness, what comes to mind? For many of us, it conjures up images of strict rule-following, flawless behavior, and the exhausting weight of trying to be “good enough” for God. We often measure our spiritual standing by our own efforts.

But in Philippians 3:9, the Apostle Paul shatters this legalistic mindset. He expresses his deepest desire: “and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith.”

True righteousness is not a trophy we earn through human effort. It is a gift we receive through faith.

Made Right: The Gift of Justification

The foundation of a follower of Christ’s righteousness begins with a divine exchange. Our righteousness consists first and foremost of being forgiven, justified—literally made right with God—and fully accepted by Him through faith (Romans 4:5).

We cannot clean ourselves up enough to earn God’s favor. Instead, Jesus takes our brokenness and sin, and in return, blankets us in His perfect standing. You are accepted not because of what you have done, but because of what He did on the cross.

Alive Inside: Christ is Our Righteousness

However, our righteousness is much more than a legal status or a clean slate. It is alive. Scripture reveals that our righteousness is actually Christ Jesus Himself living within our hearts (Philippians 1:20-21; Romans 8:10).

In the Old Testament, the prophet Jeremiah pointed to a future savior, calling the Messiah the “righteous Branch” and explicitly naming Him “The Lord Our Righteousness” (Jeremiah 23:5-6).

This means that the goodness, love, and holiness we display do not originate from our own willpower. They flow from Jesus inside us. Because of His personal sacrifice for our sins and His continuous presence within us through the Holy Spirit, we actually become the very “righteousness of God” in Him (2 Corinthians 5:21). His righteous character is meant to be expressed through our daily lives.

Sustained by Grace

What is our hope for staying in this right relationship with God? It remains the same as how we started: the sacrificial death, shed blood, and resurrection life of Jesus Christ.

  • The Cross Saves Us: Our spiritual salvation is rooted entirely in His finished work on the cross (Romans 3:24; Ephesians 1:7).
  • The Spirit Sustains Us: Our hope of remaining in Him rests on His resurrection life, active in our hearts right now through the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:10-11; Colossians 3:1-3).

If you are tired of trying to earn your way into God’s good graces, take a deep breath. Stop striving to build a righteousness of your own. Look to Jesus, place your faith in Him, and let His life live through you.

A Closing Prayer for the Righteousness of Christ

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the beautiful truth found in Your Word. I confess that too often I try to build a righteousness of my own, relying on my own strength, rules, and works to feel accepted by You. Today, I lay that heavy burden down.

Thank You for forgiving me, justifying me, and accepting me purely on the basis of faith in Your Son, Jesus Christ. Thank You, Lord Jesus, for being my righteousness. I invite You to live fully in my heart today. Let Your righteous character, Your love, and Your holiness be expressed through my words and actions. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit, and let Your resurrection power sustain me in a right relationship with You.

I anchor my hope completely in Your shed blood and Your victory over the grave.

In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
