THAT I MAY GAIN CHRIST / PHILIPPIANS 3:8-11

The Ultimate Exchange: Counting All Things Loss to Gain Christ

What do you value most in this world? If you had to audit your life right now—your achievements, your career, your financial security, your social standing—where would your sense of identity rest?

In his letter to the church at Philippi, the Apostle Paul performs a radical spiritual audit. In Philippians 3:8-11, he writes:

“Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.”

Paul looks at his impressive religious resume, his cultural heritage, and his personal achievements, and explicitly labels them as “rubbish” or “garbage”. The original Greek word he uses is incredibly strong—essentially referring to street refuse or animal waste. He isn’t saying these things are inherently evil, but rather that compared to the brilliance of knowing Jesus, they completely lose their luster.

This passage challenges us to look at our own lives through three powerful shifts:

  • From Self-Righteousness to Faith: Paul completely rejects his own ability to earn God’s favor through legalism. He trades a fragile, performance-based righteousness for the perfect righteousness that comes from God through faith.
  • From Surface Knowledge to Intimate Fellowship: To know Christ means to experience the active power of His resurrection. But it also means a willingness to share in His sufferings. True intimacy with Jesus isn’t a life of ease; it’s a life completely aligned with His character, even in hardship.
  • From Earthly Gain to Eternal Reward: The ultimately beautiful goal of the Christian life is to be found completely secure in Him, looking forward to the resurrection from the dead.

When we let go of our need to control our reputation, our status, and our goodness, we finally open our hands to receive the true prize: Jesus Himself.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We confess how easy it is to anchor our identity in worldly achievements, material comfort, and the approval of others. Grant us the spiritual vision that the Apostle Paul had. Give us the grace to lift our hands off our earthly gains and see them as secondary to the surpassing worth of knowing Jesus.

We want to truly know You, Lord. Fill us with the power of Your resurrection to overcome sin and despair, and give us the courage to walk faithfully through seasons of suffering, being conformed to Your love. Thank You for covering us in Your perfect righteousness, which we could never earn on our own. May our lives reflect the singular pursuit of gaining Christ above all else.

In the holy name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
