START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) Leviticus 19:34
But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.
Radical Hospitality: What It Truly Means to Love Your Neighbor
We are all familiar with the second greatest commandment: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” While we often point to the New Testament for this teaching, its roots run deep into the Holiness Code of the Old Testament. While Leviticus 19:18 introduces this standard for our immediate community, Leviticus 19:34 takes it a step further, shattering our cultural comfort zones:
“The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the Lord your God.”
This verse reminds us that God’s definition of a “neighbor” has never been limited by borders, backgrounds, or nationalities.
An Expansive, Borderless Love
In ancient Israel, a resident alien or stranger was incredibly vulnerable, lacking the traditional family safety nets of the land. Yet, God commanded His people not just to tolerate them, but to love them actively.
This call to action can be understood through three core truths:
- Love Demands Concrete Kindness: True love isn’t just a sentiment; it expresses itself through tangible actions. It means welcoming those who come to live in our communities, ensuring they are treated with dignity, respect, and fairness.
- The Blueprint of the Good Samaritan: Centuries later, an expert in the law tried to narrow the scope of this commandment by asking Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Jesus responded with the Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37), making it clear that our neighbor is anyone in need, regardless of ethnic or cultural divides.
- Mirrors of God’s Grace: God reminds Israel of their own history: “for you were foreigners in Egypt.” In an even greater spiritual sense, God loved us when we were “aliens”—separated from Him by our sin. He crossed the ultimate divide through Jesus Christ to bring us home. Because we have been loved unconditionally, He expects us to extend that same grace to others.
Becoming a Blessing to the Nations
From the very beginning, God’s plan was never to isolate His people, but to use them as a pipeline for His goodness. In Genesis 12:3, God promises Abraham that through his offspring, “all peoples on earth will be blessed.”
This promise finds its ultimate fulfillment in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world…” God’s heart is for all nations. When we open our hearts and communities to people of different backgrounds, we actively participate in God’s global mission of love.
Loving your neighbor as yourself means intentionally expanding your circle. Let us challenge ourselves to move past our comfort zones, look out for the outsiders in our communities, and reflect the radical, welcoming heart of God.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for loving us and drawing us near even when we were strangers and separated from You. Fill our hearts with Your Holy Spirit so that Your love overflows to everyone we meet. Break down any walls of prejudice, fear, or indifference within us. Help us to see people of all backgrounds and nationalities through Your eyes. Give us the courage and kindness to welcome the stranger, serve those in need, and love our neighbors as ourselves. May our lives be a blessing to the nations and a true reflection of Your grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
