The Danger of Seeking Hidden Knowledge: A Reflection on Leviticus 19:31

In a world full of uncertainty, it is completely natural to want answers. We long to know what the future holds, or we deeply miss loved ones who have passed away and wish for one more conversation. Because of these very human desires, many people turn to modern mystics, psychics, mediums, or tarot cards.

However, Scripture draws a very clear and loving boundary around these practices to protect us.

In Leviticus 19:31, God commands His people:

“Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the Lord your God.”

Why God Draws the Line

Historically, mediums and spiritists were individuals who attempted to communicate with the dead to uncover hidden or prophetic knowledge. While it might seem like harmless curiosity or a source of comfort, the Bible warns us that the spiritual reality behind these practices is dangerous.

When we look to spiritists for guidance, we step outside of God’s protective umbrella. Scripture reveals that these practices ultimately connect people with deceptive spiritual forces rather than true light (Leviticus 20:6; Deuteronomy 18:10-11). God does not keep secrets from us to be cruel; He forbids these practices because He loves us and wants to keep us from being spiritually defiled or misled.

Where to Turn Instead

We do not need to look to the shadows for guidance when we have access to the Creator of the universe. When you need wisdom, comfort, or direction, God invites you to come directly to Him through prayer and His Word. He holds your future, and His plans for you are good.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for being a God who guides us in truth and covers us with Your protection. Lord, forgive me for the times I have let anxiety or curiosity drive me to look for answers in the wrong places. Cleanse my heart and renew my mind.

I pray for the wisdom to discern what is from You and what is not. When I am anxious about tomorrow or grieving the past, help me to anchor my trust completely in You. I declare that You alone are my counselor, my protector, and my guide.
