HEBREW BABIES / EXODUS 2:6

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Exodus 2:6

She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him. “This is one of the Hebrew babies,” she said.

Exodus 2:6 captures one of the most pivotal, tender turning points in biblical history: “When she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the baby was crying. She had compassion on him and said, ‘This is one of the Hebrews’ children.'”

This single moment—a powerful Egyptian princess looking down at a weeping, helpless Hebrew baby in a basket—changed the course of an entire nation. It reminds us that God’s redemptive plans often begin in the weakest, most vulnerable places, and that His mercy can cross any boundary.

Here is a look at the profound lessons hidden within this verse.

1. The Sovereign Setup

Pharaoh had decreed that every Hebrew boy must be thrown into the Nile. It was an environment of state-sanctioned terror. Yet, Jochebed’s faith led her to place her three-month-old son in a basket made of bulrushes, trusting him to the very waters meant to destroy him. God did not send a legion of angels to rescue the child; instead, He orchestrated the morning routine of Pharaoh’s own daughter to intersect with the cries of a baby. God delights in using the enemy’s own household to undo the enemy’s plans.

2. A Cry That Pierced the Divide

The text notes that “behold, the baby was crying.” Moses’ tears were his only weapon. He couldn’t speak, plead, or defend himself. But those tears bridged a massive cultural, political, and social divide. To the Egyptian empire, Hebrew babies were viewed as a demographic threat to be eliminated. To Pharaoh’s daughter, however, this wasn’t a political problem—it was a hurting child.

3. Compassion Overrides Cruelty

When the princess identified the child as “one of the Hebrews’ children,” she knew the stakes. Adopting or sparing this child meant directly violating her father’s royal edict. Yet, the text says she had compassion on him. True compassion is costly. It requires us to look past societal labels, prejudices, and personal risks to see the humanity in the vulnerable. God placed His own heart of mercy inside an Egyptian princess to preserve the future deliverer of Israel.

Moving Forward in Faith

Moses in the basket is a beautiful shadow of a greater Deliverer to come. Centuries later, another king would decree the slaughter of innocent babies, and another vulnerable child—Jesus—would be hidden away in Egypt for His safety.

Whenever you feel overwhelmed by the cruelty or chaos of the world, remember Exodus 2:6. God sees the hidden things. He hears the cries of the helpless. He can turn the hearts of rulers, and He is always working behind the scenes to bring life out of decree of death.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We thank You that You are a God who hears the cries of the vulnerable and the oppressed. Just as You looked down in mercy upon the Hebrew babies in Egypt, we know You see every heart that cries out to You in secret today.

Lord, give us hearts like Pharaoh’s daughter—hearts that are willing to be moved by compassion, even when it is costly, inconvenient, or counter-cultural. Help us to see people through Your eyes of love rather than the world’s lenses of division.

We pray for protection over the innocent, the weak, and the forgotten. Where the world decrees despair, bring forth Your deliverance. Build our faith to trust You with the things we must place in the “baskets” of our lives, knowing that Your sovereign hands are always waiting on the other side.

In Jesus’ mighty name, we pray, Amen.
