Spoke with a Man’s Voice: Standing Unashamed in a World of Skepticism

In a culture that prides itself on intellectualism, the supernatural elements of Scripture are often the first things to be targeted. Today, we frequently encounter self-appointed critics—sometimes even sitting within the pews of the church—who speak with mocking disrespect and unbelief. They dismiss biblical miracles as mere allegory, myth, or the delusions of an ancient, unscientific people. To them, those of us who believe in the literal reality of God’s miraculous intervention are viewed as unenlightened, naive, or simple-minded.

But this wave of skepticism is nothing new, and the Apostle Peter gives us a powerful reality check in 2 Peter 2:16.

In this passage, Peter references one of the most unusual and highly criticized accounts in the Old Testament: the story of Balaam and his donkey. Rather than treating it as a fable or avoiding it out of fear of intellectual embarrassment, Peter boldly affirms it as historical truth. He writes that Balaam “was rebuked for his wrongdoing by a speechless donkey—an animal without speech—who spoke with a man’s voice and restrained the prophet’s madness.”

Taking God at His Word

Peter clearly and unapologetically believes in the miracles recorded in the Old Testament. By standing firmly on this historical account, Peter teaches us a vital lesson: true believers take God at His Word. We do not pick and choose which parts of Scripture are palatable to modern sensibilities. We accept all the Bible’s miracles, from the parting of the Red Sea to a donkey speaking with a man’s voice.

Furthermore, we accept the miracles of the Apostles, recognizing that the same power that raised Christ from the dead was actively at work establishing the early Church.

Believing in the miraculous does not mean we are naive; it means we understand the scope of God’s power. If God created the entire universe out of nothing by the power of His spoken word, then opening the mouth of a donkey or healing a lame man is a light thing for Him.

The God of Miracles Today

Our faith is not just rooted in what God did thousands of years ago. True believers also know and experience that God performs miracles today. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. As we see in John 6:2, a great multitude followed Jesus because they saw the signs He performed.

Today, God still responds to the prayers and absolute faith of His people. He still heals the broken, restores the hopeless, provides the impossible, and breaks the chains of sin and addiction. When the world mocks, we can stand firm, knowing that our God is alive, active, and fully capable of doing the impossible. Let us never let the skepticism of the culture quiet our confidence in the living God.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the absolute truth and power of Your Holy Word. Forgive us for the times we have allowed the skepticism and mockery of the world, or even critics within the church, to make us hesitate in our faith. We choose today to take You at Your Word. We believe in Your miracles—past, present, and future.

Increase our faith, Lord. Help us to stand unashamed of the supernatural power of the Gospel. We pray that You would continue to move miraculously in our lives, answering the prayers of Your people and drawing hearts to Jesus. In His mighty and holy name, Amen.
