But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is ‘devoted to God,’ ⁶they are not to ‘honor their father or mother’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.

For the Sake of Your Tradition

It is easy to look at the religious leaders of the New Testament and wonder how they got it so wrong. In Matthew 15:5-6, Jesus confronts the Pharisees and scribes with a devastating truth: they were actively breaking God’s commandments to uphold their own human traditions.

The specific issue Jesus highlighted involved the care of elderly parents. God’s law explicitly commanded people to honor their father and mother, a duty that practically included financial and physical support in their old age. However, the Pharisees created a religious loophole. They allowed people to declare their money or property as “Corban”—a gift dedicated to the temple. Once the money was designated for religious use, it was at the discretion of the religious leaders, enhancing their wealth and influence, while the aging parents were left with nothing.

By wrapping greed and neglect in the garment of religious devotion, they felt justified. But Jesus pulled back the curtain, stating plainly that they had nullified the word of God for the sake of their tradition.

This ancient trap did not disappear with the Pharisees. Today, the modern church faces the exact same danger. It is shockingly easy to substitute the actual commands of Scripture—like loving our neighbors, caring for the vulnerable, and acting with absolute integrity—with cultural norms, political ideologies, popular church traditions, or personal conveniences.

We nullify the word of God when we use religious language to justify selfish behavior. We fall into this trap when we prioritize maintaining our institutional comfort over sacrificing for those in need. Whenever our traditions, church politics, or personal interests cause us to bypass the clear moral boundaries of Scripture, we walk the same path as the leaders Jesus rebuked.

God does not desire performance that masks disobedience. True faith requires us to constantly evaluate our habits, structures, and cultures against the truth of God’s Word, ensuring that our loyalty remains with the Creator rather than our own ideas.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, forgive us for the times we have allowed our own traditions, comfort, and cultural norms to take precedence over Your truth. Search our hearts and reveal any area where we are using religious duties or personal conveniences as an excuse to bypass Your commands. Grant us the humility to align our actions with Your Word and the courage to break away from any tradition that nullifies Your love and justice. May our devotion be genuine, marked by obedience, compassion, and a true reverence for You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
