Faithful in the Shadows: What Acts 1:23 Teaches Us About God’s Call
In the wake of Jesus’ ascension, the remaining eleven apostles found themselves in an intense season of waiting and transition. They were tasked with a monumental mission, yet they carried a heavy, visible scar: the vacancy left by Judas Iscariot. As they gathered in the upper room to find a replacement, they established clear criteria. The candidate had to be someone who had walked with them from the days of John’s baptism all the way through the resurrection.
This brings us to Acts 1:23, a verse that names two ordinary men who had quietly remained faithful through it all: “And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also called Justus, and Matthias.”
The Beauty of Quiet Faithfulness
What is most striking about this moment is what it reveals about the community of early believers. We often focus on the prominent names in the New Testament—Peter, John, and later, Paul. But Acts 1:23 reminds us that there was a deeper circle of disciples who saw everything Jesus did, experienced the same miracles, and witnessed the resurrection, yet their names were never broadcast

Joseph and Matthias did not follow Jesus for the title of “Apostle.” They followed Him because they believed He was the Messiah. For years, they served in the background, completely content to be in the shadows. When leadership was needed, their names naturally rose to the surface because their character had already been proven in obscurity.
When the Choice is in God’s Hands
The apostles did not rely on a popularity contest or political maneuvering to make their choice. Instead, they put forward the two qualified men, surrendered their own preferences, and prayed for God to reveal the heart. Ultimately, as the narrative continues, the lot fell to Matthias, and he was numbered with the apostles.
This leaves us with a profound question: What about Joseph?
Joseph was equally qualified, equally faithful, and equally devoted. Yet, the door opened for Matthias, and it remained closed for Joseph. Acts 1:23 stands as a powerful testament to how we respond to God’s sovereignty. It challenges us to examine how we react when we are overlooked, or when God chooses someone else for a role we are fully equipped to handle. Joseph’s story reminds us that being unchosen by human lots does not mean being unloved or unusable by God. The work of the Kingdom requires both those who step into the spotlight and those who continue to serve faithfully in the quiet spaces.
Whether you currently feel called into leadership or feel entirely overlooked in your service, remember that God sees the heart. True discipleship is not about the titles we hold, but about the faithfulness with which we follow.
Closing Prayer
Lord God, You know the hearts of all people, and Your choices are always good, wise, and just. We thank You for the example of the early apostles and the quiet faithfulness of servants like Joseph and Matthias. Give us the grace to offer ourselves fully to Your work, whether we are called to step forward or to serve in the background.
Where we are overlooked by the world, hold us close and remind us of our identity in You. Where we are chosen or given leadership, keep us deeply humble and dependent on Your Spirit. Deliver us from the temptation to manipulate outcomes or seek human validation. Teach us to trust Your sovereignty completely, knowing that every role in Your Kingdom is vital. Guide our decisions, direct our steps, and keep our hearts settled in Your peace. In the holy name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
