(KJV) Galatians 4:13
Ye know how through infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you at the first.
Purpose in the Pain: What Paul’s Illness Teaches Us About Modern Suffering
We often fall into the trap of believing that if we are doing God’s work, our lives should run smoothly. We think faithful service brings a shield against bodily brokenness. But the New Testament paints a drastically different picture.
In Galatians 4:13, the Apostle Paul makes a vulnerable confession to the believers in Galatia: “As you know, it was because of an illness that I first preached the gospel to you.”
Think about that for a moment. One of the greatest missionary journeys in human history wasn’t launched out of a position of strategic strength, but out of physical weakness and unexpected suffering.
The Nature of Paul’s Thorn
Theologians have long debated the exact nature of Paul’s ailment. While the Bible doesn’t name it explicitly, the clues left behind point to a few strong possibilities:
- Severe Eye Trouble: Just a few verses later, in Galatians 4:15, Paul notes that the Galatians would have “torn out your own eyes and given them to me” if they could. Later, he signs the letter by pointing out the “large letters” he uses to write with his own hand.
- Malaria: The swampy, low-lying coastal regions Paul traveled through were breeding grounds for standard Mediterranean strains of malaria, which caused debilitating fevers and physical exhaustion.
- The “Thorn in the Flesh”: Many scholars connect this ailment to the infamous “thorn” Paul describes in 2 Corinthians 12:7, a persistent physical misery that God chose not to remove.
- The Scars of Persecution: Paul was beaten, whipped, and even stoned. It is entirely possible that his “illness” was the lingering, painful aftereffect of physical trauma endured for the name of Christ.
God Uses Broken Vessels
Regardless of the exact medical diagnosis, the spiritual diagnosis is clear: Christ’s faithful followers are not immune to ill health, bodily pain, or weakness.
Paul did not let his physical limitations silence his message. Instead, his weakness became the very vehicle God used to anchor the gospel in Galatia. When we are brought low by sickness or chronic pain, it is easy to feel benched—like we are no longer useful to the Kingdom. But Paul’s life proves that God’s power is uniquely engineered to show up in our empty spaces.
Your diagnosis does not disqualify you from your purpose. Sometimes, the hospital bed, the doctor’s waiting room, or the quiet isolation of chronic illness becomes the exact mission field God has called you to impact. Our strongest testimonies rarely come from high pedestals of perfect health; they are forged when we praise God through the fire of suffering.
A Closing Prayer for Strength in Weakness
Heavenly Father,
We come to You acknowledging that our bodies are fragile and our strength is limited. For those of us walking through seasons of physical pain, chronic illness, or unexpected diagnoses, we ask for Your comfort. Help us to remember the example of Your servant Paul, who did not allow physical suffering to derail Your divine purposes.
Lord, when we feel weak, remind us that Your grace is entirely sufficient. When our bodies fail us, let Your supernatural power rest upon us. Do not let our pain anchor us in despair; instead, use our vulnerabilities to display Your strength, consistency, and love to a watching world. We anchor our trust in You, knowing that You waste nothing and can use even our deepest infirmities for Your ultimate glory.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
In Jesus’ holy name we pray, Amen.
