THE SONS OF GOD / GENESIS 6:1-2

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Genesis 6:1-2

And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.

The Danger of Compromise: Understanding the “Sons of God” in Genesis 6

In the opening verses of Genesis 6, we encounter a pivotal moment in human history that ultimately led to the Great Flood. The text tells us that the “sons of God” saw the “daughters of men” and began taking them as wives. But who exactly were these groups, and why did their union cause such deep grief to God?

Identifying the “Sons of God”

There are various interpretations regarding the phrase “sons of God” (Genesis 6:1-2). A common theory suggests these were fallen angels who cross-bred with human women. However, Scripture itself provides a more grounded, contextual answer.

Jesus clearly stated in the Gospels that angels do not marry (Matthew 22:30; Mark 12:25). Instead, when we look at the broader narrative of scripture, terms relating to God’s children often denote his covenant-bound followers (Deuteronomy 14:1; Hosea 1:10).

The most likely explanation is that the “sons of God” refers to the godly descendants of Seth—the family line chosen to preserve the worship of Yahweh. Conversely, the “daughters of men” represents women from Cain’s ungodly lineage, a family line that had completely walked away from the presence of the Lord (Genesis 4:16).

The Cost of Spiritual Compromise

The tragedy of Genesis 6 is not a sci-fi invasion, but a story of spiritual compromise. The godly line, attracted by physical beauty alone, began to intermarry with a culture that rejected God.

This toxic union of the godly with the ungodly did not elevate the unrighteous; instead, it dragged the righteous down. This compromise directly resulted in rampant wickedness across the earth (Genesis 6:5). The godly family line became so preoccupied with evil that eventually, the entire world became completely corrupt and filled with violence (Genesis 6:11-13).

The Lesson for Us Today

Genesis 6 stands as a stark warning about the company we keep and the covenants we make. Who we align our hearts, families, and lives with matters. When we compromise our spiritual foundations for worldly desires, we risk drifting into a place of corruption. God calls us to remain distinct, anchoring our lives firmly in His righteousness rather than blending into the culture around us.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the warnings and truths found in Your Word. We ask for the wisdom and discernment to guard our hearts against spiritual compromise. Help us to walk firmly in Your truth, choosing godly paths and aligning our lives with those who love and honor You. Grant us the strength to stand distinct in a world that often celebrates brokenness. May our thoughts, actions, and relationships honor Your name and bring light to the darkness around us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
