(KJV) 1 Thessalonians 2:4
But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts.
Audience of One: Living and Speaking to Please God
Every person called to share the gospel or lead in ministry faces a subtle, persistent temptation: the desire for human approval. It is a natural human craving to want to be liked, accepted, and honored. However, when this desire creeps into how we share God’s word, it transforms from a personal weakness into a dangerous spiritual compromise.
In his first letter to the church at Thessalonica, the Apostle Paul addresses this head-on, laying down a foundational standard for anyone engaged in Christian service:
“On the contrary, we speak as those approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel. We are not trying to please people but God, who tests our hearts.” — 1 Thessalonians 2:4
The Danger of a People-Pleasing Ministry
When the fear of man overrides the fear of God, ministry quickly loses its power. To avoid offending anyone or risking our own popularity, it becomes easy to trim the edges of truth. This compromise often manifests in specific, damaging ways:
- Tolerating Sin: Staying silent on difficult truths to keep the peace, which ultimately leads to spiritual compromise and complacency within the church family.
- Flattering Speech: Using manipulative or overly accommodating language to gain personal honor, secure higher positions, or protect financial giving.
- Entertainment Over Substance: Shifting the focus of ministry from heart transformation to merely keeping crowds entertained and comfortable.
As scripture warns us, giving in to these temptations can cause a church to suffer irreparable damage to its integrity, completely stripping away its ability to authentically represent Jesus Christ to the surrounding community.
Entrusted with the Truth
Paul’s antidote to this temptation is a shift in perspective. He reminds us that we have been approved by God and entrusted with the gospel. The gospel is not ours to edit; it is a sacred trust to be managed faithfully.
Our ultimate accountability is not to the culture, the critics, or even the congregation. We serve an audience of One. While preaching to please people might build temporary attendance, only preaching to please God builds an eternal foundation. When we clear away the distraction of human expectations, we are free to minister with pure motives, knowing that God is the one who ultimately tests and refines our hearts.
A Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the incredible privilege of being entrusted with the truth of the gospel. Lord, forgive us for the times we have allowed the desire for human approval or the fear of rejection to dictate our words and actions. We ask that You root out any motives of people-pleasing, pride, or flattery from our hearts.
Grant us the holy courage to speak Your truth with boldness, humility, and love, never watering down Your word for the sake of comfort. May our primary ambition always be to please You, the One who tests our hearts. Protect Your church from compromise, and let our lives be a pure reflection of Your grace and integrity.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
