START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) Numbers 11:6
But now our soul is dried away: there is nothing at all, beside this manna, before our eyes.
The Danger of Becoming Bored with God’s Blessings: Reflections on Numbers 11:6
We have all been there. We pray fervently for a breakthrough—a new job, a stable routine, a quiet season, or a specific answer to prayer. God, in His infinite faithfulness, delivers exactly what we need. But then, time passes. The extraordinary breakthrough matures into our ordinary everyday routine. The miracle becomes mundane.
This is the exact spiritual trap we witness in the Book of Numbers, specifically in Numbers 11:6.
The Cry of Ingratitude
To understand the weight of this verse, we have to look at what the Israelites were experiencing. They had been rescued from centuries of brutal slavery in Egypt. They had walked through the Red Sea on dry ground. And as they journeyed through a harsh, barren wilderness, God rained down supernatural food from heaven every single morning—manna.
Yet, listen to their complaint in Numbers 11:6:
“But now we have lost our appetite; we never see anything but this manna!”
It is an uncomfortable passage because it reflects a deeply human flaw: contempt for the familiar. The word manna literally translates to “What is it?” It was a miraculous, daily visual anchor of Jehovah-Jireh—the Lord Who Provides. But because it came without fail every morning, the Israelites grew tired of it. They began to look backward at the foods of Egypt, romanticizing their time in captivity because their current, safe provision felt boring.
When the Miracle Becomes Mundane
When we read their story, it is easy to judge them. How could they grumble about bread from heaven?
But how often do we do the very same thing?
- The Job: We pray for employment, get hired, and a year later, we are complaining about the daily commute or the routine tasks.
- The Home: We long for a safe place to live, and years later, we grumble about the maintenance or the lack of space.
- The Season: We beg God for a season of peace after a major storm, only to call that peace “boring” once it arrives.
The Israelites didn’t stop eating the manna; they just stopped valuing it. They lost their appetite for what God had provided because they allowed comparison and routine to choke out their gratitude.
Cultivating a Holy Appetite
How do we avoid the spiritual numbness of Numbers 11:6? We must intentionally shift our focus from what we don’t have to the quiet faithfulness of what we do have. Manna was never meant to be a luxury feast; it was daily sustenance designed to teach Israel to trust God one day at a time.
If you are feeling weary of your current routine, ask God to renew your perspective. The “manna” in your life right now—your health, your daily bread, your quiet days—is keeping you alive in the wilderness. Let’s not lose our appetite for the faithfulness of God.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
We come before You today acknowledging how easily our hearts can drift into ingratitude. Forgive us for the times we have looked at Your miraculous, daily provision in our lives and muttered, “Is this all?” Forgive us for romanticizing the past and failing to see the grace of the present.
Lord, cure us of our spiritual boredom. Open our eyes to see the beauty in the mundane and the miracles hidden within our daily routines. Give us a renewed appetite for Your presence and Your provision. We thank You that Your mercies are new every morning, falling just like the manna in the desert. Teach us to contentedly trust You for exactly what we need today.
In the mighty and loving name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
