START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Colossians 1:9-12
We Have Not Stopped Praying For You: How to Pray with Purpose
Imagine having someone in your corner who never stops lifting you up in prayer. Every single day, your name is brought before the throne of grace. For the early church in Colossae, this wasn’t a wish—it was reality.
In Colossians 1:9-12, the Apostle Paul shares one of his four great New Testament prayers recorded under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit (the others being Ephesians 1:16-19; Ephesians 3:14-19; Philippians 1:9-11). These dynamic prayers provide us with a masterclass on how to pray for the people we love most—our friends, parents, children, pastors, missionaries, and fellow believers.
When we don’t know what to say, Paul shows us exactly what to ask for.
The Blueprint of a Powerful Prayer
Often, our prayers focus primarily on physical needs, safety, or comfort. While these matter to God, Paul shifts our focus to deep, transformative spiritual growth. When we pray through Colossians 1:9-12, we are asking God to help others:
- Understand God’s Will & Gain Spiritual Wisdom: To be filled with the absolute knowledge of what God wants, guided by deep spiritual insight rather than the wisdom of this world.
- Live Wisely and Holily: To walk in a way that is morally pure, spiritually whole, and dedicated entirely to God. Our daily lives should be well-pleasing to Him in every way.
- Bear Fruit for Christ: To serve Him effectively, seeing real results in both their personal character and their outward ministry.
- Be Strengthened Spiritually: To be infused with the Holy Spirit’s glorious might so they can cultivate supernatural endurance and patience, even when times are tough.
- Give Thanks to the Father: To live with a heart overflowing with gratitude, keeping their eyes focused on their heavenly inheritance.
By aligning our prayers with these truths, we pray for the experience of Christ’s near love, the discernment to choose right over wrong, and the power to live sincerely as we eagerly await the Lord’s return.
A Closing Prayer for Someone You Love
You can use this prayer today to lift up a family member, a friend, or a leader in your life.
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the beautiful gift of community and the privilege of bringing those I love before Your throne. Today, following the example of the Apostle Paul, I declare that I will not stop praying for them.
Lord, I ask that You fill them completely with the knowledge of Your will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. Grant them the insight to discern between truth and error, and the courage to choose what is right by Your standards. Let Your Holy Spirit empower them to live a life worthy of You, pleasing You in every way.
May they bear rich, beautiful fruit in every good work they do, and may they grow deeper in their personal relationship with You every single day. Strengthen them with all power according to Your glorious might, giving them the endurance and patience to navigate life’s challenges with joy.
Keep their hearts anchored in heavenly hope, filled with Your love, and fully aware of Christ’s nearness. Help them live sincerely and blamelessly as they look forward to Your return. We joyfully give You thanks for rescuing us and making us part of Your eternal kingdom.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
