START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) Colossians 1:9
For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;
Seeking the Heart of the Father: Understanding the Knowledge of His Will
We often treat finding God’s will like trying to solve a complex puzzle or uncover a hidden secret. We look for external signs, open doors, or sudden flashes of clarity to point us toward the “right” career path, the “right” relationship, or the “right” decision. But in his letter to the Colossians, the Apostle Paul reframes how we look at discernment entirely.
In Colossians 1:9, Paul writes, “For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives.”
Paul reveals a profound truth here: knowing God’s desires and plans is not a mechanical formula. It is the natural overflow of an intimate, deep personal relationship with Him. We cannot truly know the will of God without prioritizing a connection to the character and purposes of God Himself.
This relational knowledge grows out of intentional, consistent habits. It deepens when we immerse ourselves in the study of Scripture. As we look at how Paul links this prayer to life in verses like Philippians 1:9, we see that spiritual discernment is meant to be lived out. Our ability to recognize His voice sharpens as we actively apply His Word to our everyday decisions, attitudes, and actions.
When we seek God first, rather than just seeking His directional data, the Holy Spirit transforms us from the inside out. We receive true spiritual wisdom and understanding. This supernatural insight changes how we think, how we react, and how we love, guiding our hearts to walk in a manner that honors Him. Today, let’s shift our focus from asking “What is God’s plan for my life?” to “How can I know God more deeply today?”
A Closing Prayer for Spiritual Wisdom
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the beautiful gift of relationship with You. We ask today that You fill us completely with the knowledge of Your will through all the spiritual wisdom and understanding that Your Holy Spirit provides. Forgive us for the times we treat Your guidance as a map to consume rather than an invitation to walk beside You.
Teach us to slow down, to listen to Your voice in prayer, and to anchor our minds in Your truth. Give us the courage to apply Your Word to our daily choices, our secret attitudes, and our public actions. Transform our hearts so that our desires align perfectly with Yours, and may our lives bring You joy and honor in everything we do.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
