(KJV) Galatians 5:4
Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.
Fallen Away from Grace: The Trap of Performance-Based Faith
Have you ever caught yourself trying to “earn” your way into God’s good graces? You read your Bible a little longer, cross off every moral duty on your checklist, and suddenly feel like you’re a “good Christian.” Conversely, when you slip up, do you feel like God has turned His back on you?
If so, you are not alone. In fact, you’re wrestling with the exact same issue that plagued the early church in Galatia.
In Galatians 5:4, the Apostle Paul delivers a staggering wake-up call to believers who had shifted their focus from the finished work of Jesus to legalistic standards and rigid rule-keeping:
“You who are trying to be justified by the law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace.”
The Alienation of Legalism
Some of the Galatian Christians had begun to believe that faith in Christ wasn’t quite enough. They started relying on human traditions, cultural rules, and an strict adherence to religious laws to secure their standing with God.
Paul doesn’t mince words about the danger of this mindset. He warns that trying to earn salvation through the law actually cuts a person off from a personal relationship with Jesus.
When we rely on our own performance, we step off the foundation of God’s grace—His unearned, unmerited favor and love—and step onto the fragile treadmill of self-righteousness. Legalism tells us we can save ourselves, which makes the cross of Christ unnecessary. But scripture is clear: only by faith in Christ can a person enter and maintain a right relationship with God (Ephesians 2:8-9).
True Obedience Flows From Love
Does this mean God’s moral standards no longer matter? Not at all.
The difference lies entirely in our motivation:
- The Legalist obeys out of fear, pride, or a desire to gain God’s favor and earn salvation.
- The Believer obeys out of love, gratitude, and thankfulness for a salvation that has already been freely given.
Following God’s principles should never be a heavy burden we carry to prove our worth. Instead, it is something we do naturally through the power of the Holy Spirit living within us. True life and spiritual freedom are found in resting in Jesus, not in checking off religious boxes.
If you’ve been feeling exhausted by the weight of trying to be “perfect,” remember today that your relationship with God is sustained by His grace, not your performance. Let go of the rules, and run back to the relationship.
A Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the radical, beautiful gift of Your grace. Forgive me for the times I have slipped into a performance-based faith, trying to earn the love and salvation that You have already so freely given through Your Son.
Help me to guard my heart against the trap of legalism and rule-keeping. Remind me daily that my right standing with You is anchored solely in what Jesus did on the cross, not in my own strength or perfection. May my obedience and love for Your word flow naturally from a heart of deep gratitude and surrender. Holy Spirit, empower me to walk in the true freedom of Your grace today.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
