Beyond the Altar: Understanding the Eternal Glory of Matthew 22:30

For many of us, the concept of eternity is filled with images of joyful reunions, endless peace, and the restoration of everything we hold dear on earth. But there is one teaching of Jesus that often catches people off guard, sometimes causing a bit of anxiety or sadness: “At the resurrection, people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.” (Matthew 22:30).

If you are happily married, this verse might initially feel like a loss. If you are single and hope to be married, it might feel confusing. However, when we look closer at the context of Jesus’ words, we find that this teaching isn’t about subtracting joy from our eternal lives—it is about expanding it beyond anything we can currently imagine.

The Context of the Question

Jesus spoke these words to the Sadducees, a religious group that did not believe in the resurrection of the dead. In an attempt to trap Jesus and make the idea of the afterlife look ridiculous, they presented a hypothetical scenario based on Old Testament law: a woman whose husband dies without children marries his brother, who then also dies. This happens seven times. They mockingly asked, “In the resurrection, then, whose wife of the seven will she be?”.

Jesus’ response directly challenged their small view of eternity: “You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God” (Matthew 22:29).

Why Does Earthly Marriage End?

To understand why marriage ceases in heaven, we have to look at what marriage was designed to do on earth. According to scripture, earthly marriage serves two primary functions that will no longer be necessary in the resurrection:

Procreation and Survival: In our earthly state, marriage provides the foundation for family and the continuation of the human race. In heaven, we will possess eternal, resurrected bodies. There is no death, which means there is no longer a need for procreation to sustain humanity.
A Shadow of a Greater Reality: As the Apostle Paul writes in Ephesians 5:31-32, human marriage is actually a profound mirror reflecting the relationship between Christ and the Church. It is a temporary signpost. Once you reach the destination, you no longer need the signpost. In heaven, the ultimate marriage is fully realized as the Church is united eternally with the Bridegroom, Jesus.

Deeper Love, Not Less Love

It is a common misconception that because earthly marriage ends, we won’t recognize or care for our spouses in heaven.

On earth, marriage is an exclusive bond meant to provide intimacy and eliminate loneliness. In the resurrection, our capacity to love will be perfected. The deep, intimate love you feel for a spouse today will not vanish; rather, all relationships in heaven will be elevated to an even higher, more perfect level of intimacy, entirely free from jealousy, sin, or misunderstanding.

We will not be lonely or missing something in heaven. Instead, we will find that the best parts of human love were merely a foretaste of the boundless joy waiting for us in the presence of God.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We thank You for the beautiful gift of human relationships and the blessing of marriage that points us to Your deep love for us. Help us not to anchor our hearts too tightly to the temporary structures of this world, but to keep our eyes fixed on the eternal glory ahead.

Where we struggle to understand Your ways, grant us peace. Remind us that Your plans for our resurrected lives are filled with a joy, intimacy, and fullness that far exceed our earthly imaginations. Teach us to love one another purely today, catching a glimpse of the perfect fellowship we will share in Your kingdom forever.
